I don't think that is. But putting the headphone jack back in would mean removing some other functionality that is now present.
There's certainly that aspect to it, although it doesn't necessarily have to be just "black or white" like that. It's possible they wouldn't have had to design some components a little differently and/or make the phone slightly thicker or larger in some way and/or something else. That's not to say that one is better than the other or vice versa, just that it's not necessarily just either this or that basically.

For instance I'd hate to have to give up the cool new haptic engine just to get a headphone jack back. There are already alternative solutions to having no headphone jack, but there's no solution to removing the excellent haptics.

It doesn't seem like that was really much of a factor in all of it, given that it wasn't really something mentioned, as, probably more relevantly, there are other similar phones out there with the jack that are just as water resistant or even more so and essentially waterproof (given that the iPhone 7 isn't actually waterproof, just water resistant).

What smartphone out there is essentially waterproof?
Higher IP rating does not mean water proof.

Thus the word of "essentially" (in addition to "if not"). Certainly more so than just resistant. That said, what would be waterproof then?

Sure, but, as I mentioned, it doesn't necessarily mean that one means the other can't be there.

Why are there people complaining that other devices have the headphone jack?

There has only been one other device released after the iPhone 7, the MacBook Pro, which was designed before the iPhone 7 headphone jack decision was made, and was intended to be released before the iPhone 7.
There are no new iPads yet but it's rumored they'll keep it as well as most other Macs due to the fact they have the space and will have that space for a long time. They said themselves that it is used for professional applications that Mac and iPad users may rely on and therefore they are keeping it by now.

While Lightning is better than the headphone jack, they do not believe it is the future so don't expect Lightning on Macs. They're only including Lightning EarPods because wireless is too expensive to include in the box, but wireless is what Apple are set on.

As for removing it, here are the reasons they did it:
  • They see the future as wireless audio, and the iPhone is their most popular device and perfect to push everyone towards wireless audio.
  • It allows for more flexibility in future iPhone designs.
These are not the reasons:
  • It allowed for more space for features in the iPhone 7.
  • It was done for waterproofing.
  • To push lightning audio.
  • To make people buy AirPods.
Having said that, it did make the first 2 easier.

Out of curiosity, what's the timeline when it comes to iPhone 7 design vs the current MacBook Pro?

Why is the iPhone the only device without a headphone jack?

Because it is the only device that can easily get dropped into water and thus get destroyed and returned to Apple with non-reclaimable components.

The headphone jack and the physical home button were the places that water intrusion occurred the most and caused Apple the most loss of profit due to exchange policies. The lightning connector is not an advance in technology or sound quality; it is a means by which to tighten up the supply chain and increase profits.

Well if there isn't enough space for both, it does!

Or things could be designed so that there's either more space and/or enough space for both things.

I'm sure it would be very easy to simply make the device bigger and make room for all sorts of crazy things, but I guess that wouldn't align with the design objectives of a portable device like a smartphone.

As it stands, the 7 plus is packed with hardware. There just isn't enough room for a 3.5mm jack.

In it's current design, sure. There's certainly a good chance that it could have been similarly designed with a 3.5mm jack and everything else it has with more or less the same external design as well, if that is what was desired.

I guess if that had been possible, that's what would have happened.

But here we are, and that doesn't seem to have been possible.

Well, the decisions aren't really necessarily based on just what's possible, but what is desired as well, for whatever reason (among other things).

Of course, and all of those things combined means no headphone jack.

And that's the reason why the iPhone 7 has no headphone jack.

Right. It just doesn't necessarily mean that there couldn't have been one without something else being sacrificed.

Well weighing up the possible reasons, on balance it would seem like the most influential.
It can be seen that way if that's the way it's looked at. But, again, it doesn't even seem that Apple themselves have indicated that (and it seems like they would if that was in fact the most influential reason).

In a sense it sort of comes down to the chicken or the egg type of question: was the removal influenced by the design, or the design influenced by the removal.

Well the removal of the physical home button requires a much bigger and more advanced vibration motor to properly mimic the feeling of pressing a button (and the other haptics the phone now offers).

That part is now about 3 or 4 times bigger than the previous vibration motor, so something had to give in the design to allow it to fit.

And as a 3.5mm jack can very easily be replaced with either lightning or wireless headphones, the 3.5mm jack was the most redundant piece of hardware in the device that Apple could easily do away with.

I bought the fuze case which is an extra battery, has a lightening adapter, and the 3.5mm jack. That is a good work around. However, I am having some issues with it but it is a great idea and I have hope for the company.

Because Apple always is leader for new brave decisions and innovations.
I could say freely World would be poor without Apple. I like because they remove headphone jack.
Now and customers who want wireless phone could enjoy in clean device and in same time people could use adapter with their headphones if they don't want wireless heaphones or Airpods.
But it's only matter of time when wireless will become priority and on Androids.
They always follow Apple, from beginning.
