Seriously curious. I can't find too much on it. I figure if it's in the macbook pros, why not the minis...

Cuz MM 2018 uses a desktop processor that runs a lot hotter. Macbook Pro uses a mobile processor.

8 cores could feature in a future refresh if suitable CPUs could be found. I can't imagine that Apple would have gone for desktop CPUs if there wasn't an upgrade path coming up when they could definitely have stuck with the mobile CPUs which now have 8 core options.

Sticking to mobile CPUs would have allowed for more options - and possibly a higher turbo ceiling - at the expense of higher cost.

That said, a 2020 refresh for the Mini may just mean doubling the storage for free in my opinion.

Just need a MiniPro. 2 x pcie (1 for graphics (whatever's replacing Radeon vii next month etc), 1 for SSD), slots for memory. T2. Silent. AMD 3950/60/70/90x.

Would it sell truckloads?

I too want something in between the mini and mac pro. A Mini-Pro would be perfect. Heck, even just include a dedicated GPU inside the mini and I'll be happy. If the Macbook Pros have them, why can't the mini? Even if it increased in size somewhat, I wouldn't care. Something a little more powerful than the current mini, but not as hardcore and pricey as the mac pro 7,1 would be perfect. I'd buy it as soon as it was released. I don't want an iMac. I want the freedom of choosing my own display and peripherals.

A mantra that's been repeated over the years in 'the other thread' but perhaps that ship has sailed with the use of desktop CPUs in the 2018 Mini. eGPU is easy enough now though, even though it's pricey.

It would save me having to buy a win 10 AMD3960x after CES - Just waiting for Radeon vii replacement.
T2 in macbookpro / Mac 7 means all new macs will be locked to Apples SSD's, so no no more hackintoshes. But if apple made a macminipro, then they'd be no demand for hackintosh anyhow. And they'd sell more machines.

And I wouldn't have to wait 2 hours to do a render on the trashcan! Lumion / 2080Ti would have done it in a minute or two.

8700b used by ’18 Mini is already clocked down version in order to meet the reduced TDP requirement. Just like that, Apple can reduce 8core’s clock speed down anytime. Don’t make it looks like 8C CPU is not available, it’s just Apple not doing it.

No, 8700B is identical to 8700 except for socket.

I think a desktop-class 8 core would probably melt through the mini's case (as it is currently) and onto one's desk. Like a mini Chernobyl.

A laptop-class 8 core likely wouldn't be any faster than a desktop-class 6 core. And downclocking an 8 core desktop processor, again, wouldn't be any faster.

Though anything is going to be better than the dual core 3GHz i7 in my 2014 mini, lol. Need to replace it, but dragging my feet as it mostly still works for what I need it for (email, web, Microsoft Office, and that's about it).

More cores is always good, but I really think it justs need a dedicated GPU and $100 off.
Sadly, neither of which I think will ever happen.

I have no idea what you're going on about
You want a souped up Mac Mini but I don't think you will want to know much Apple would charge for it. You would be looking at least at a $1500 base model.

Apple will not be adding features to the mini if it eats into sales of their other machines. There is a reason this is the low end machine. If you max it out now you are looking at over $3000.
