Because "iTouch" is an idiotic name that doesn't tell what the product is.

iPod touch tells you that it is an iPod and you can touch it.
iPod classic tells you it's the old style iPod.
iPod nano tells you it's small.
iPod shuffle tells you it plays randomly.

And this is the iTouch.

Tallest Skil is right. what if there was the itouch inano iclassic and, dare i say it, ishuffle! sounds gay. iPhone was like that because the i still gives it the ipod ability or reminder, but the main point is the phone part. cause ipod phone is gay and ia lie because the main part is the phone. But the important part is that ipod touch, itouch or watever u wanna call it is awesome and i cant wait for the 3rd gen to be announced in Sep.

"iTouch" is no worse than "iPod" - iPod doesn't really tell you much about what the product is/does either.

You know, oddly, I never thought about it. But I presume if I called my iPhone an "ipod phone" it would start having sex acts with other iPhone's of the same gender. But then again, I never really realized that my phone had a gender? Can you describe this process a little bit more for me as I am lost as to why my iPhone may or may not be homosexual.

But the iPod is the name. Sure there are variations, but iPod is the name on the box. "Made for iTouch" is not really that rampant.

Eh, what is that supposed to mean?

Because they're the iPod nano, iPod classic, iPod shuffle etc.

Hey Bart what thats in your hand?
OOo it's a shuffle, the new ones are so cool!!!

Do you see the word "iPod" there? No... it's slang and many people prefer not to use English properly anyways. Therefore people tend to use acronyms more than ever and simply state that they have the "Classic" or the "Nano" or... you get it.

So why isn't it called the ITouch? Well I call it the touch... or the Ipod... i dont call it the iPod touch and i do not call it the itouch. Why? Does it matter to you why I don't call it that? No... then stop asking and stop creating threads on topics that don't matter. It's common sense, idiot, call the device whatevrr you want... it doesn't have feeling you can hurt.

I think the question was why isn't the official name for the product "iTouch," not whether or not people abbreviate the name in daily usage, and if so, what they abbreviate it to.

As far as abbreviating the name in daily usage, the mods agree with you -- they've told us people can call it whatever they want as long as it's clear what they are talking about, and we shouldn't waste time discussing what *we* call the product and why.

I rather like the name "iPod touch" better. As some have stated it sounds more...mature. Although stated somewhere else in this forum, I am lazy and just call it an iPod.

Why Apple decided not to call the device an iTouch? I guess a stroll through the gutter would answer that question for you. My husband said the jokes just write themselves after that point. :D

Because it seems that in europe, things are named for more obvious reason. i.e. football-soccer, um a baby gets pushed in a push cart-stroller(in us). So, i would think if apple hq was in europe, it would be called and iTouch. We would also have, glassbook pro, whitebook. Just sayin. Makes sense to me.

1. It's a derivative of the iPod family (iPod Classic, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, iPod Touch).

2. If you were to call the iPod Touch "iTouch," then I assume that you are also calling the other iPods "iClassic," "iNano," and "iShuffle." Oh, you don't? Sounds a little dumb? Well that's how calling the iPod Touch an "iTouch" sounds to a lot of people - dumb. It might sound a little clever, or easier, or whatever, to call it an "iTouch", but it sounds like nails on a chalkboard to a lot of people.

Personally I refer to mine as my iPod Touch, or simply my "Touch." And yes, I do correct people when they call it an "iTouch."

Additionally:
--There is already a product called an ITouch on the market that is not made by Apple.
--The iPhone is primarily a phone with iPod features rather than an iPod with phone features (though I'm sure that an entire debate can be made regarding that too), so that's why it is simply called the "iPhone."

Ouch, wrong topic to bring up here in macforums, quite the touchy subject.

Why isn't it called an iTouch? Because people would take that out of context and it sounds iffy.

Or because it's an iPod...with multi-touch capabilities. iPod + Touch = iPod Touch. OMGZ.

Or simply because Steve Jobs said so.

Because I don't give a s*** what you touch.

Anyway, for those of you who believe that calling it an iTouch is somehow not saying what the product does and then leaves with the argument where you say "shuffle tells you it plays randomly" you're delusional especially since they all shuffle when they play.

I couldn't care less what people call it but I know certain forum members who would probably off themselves if the name ever became widespread.

I can see the commercial now touting its networking functionality
..."when I think about you iTouch myself"...

Seriously, why Apple (and no longer Apple Computer), why no longer iBook...why ask why? Go back to work and be productive, people!

It's my perception that the term iPod has reached a point of cultural saturation such that people are beginning to use it to describe other brands of MP3 players.

Not all tissues are Kleenex brand, yet many people refer to all tissues as "kleenex". The point here is that when you've created a household term that to many folks means MP3 player - regardless of brand - doesn't it make good sense to continue to apply that brand to everything you can?

Don't you think that if Microsoft could, they'd start calling the Zune an "iPod Zune"? I do. They've certainly done everything they could to replicate the iPod feature-set. Might as well co-opt the name as well, right?

Yeah, the new iPods are so much more than iPods, we should just abandon that naming convention for something new that is less familiar to the general public. It'll cost a fortune in marketing, but "iTouch" just sounds so cool...

You are exactly 100% correct!

...it's all marketing!!! ;)

While I agree that in common vernacular, iPod has been generalized. However, legally, Microsoft cannot co-opt it. While most of us call them Jet Ski's, that is a BRAND of "personal watercraft."

I'm just glad Apple was so innovative it's name has been synonymous with mp3 players from all makers. Unfortunately, Windows is synonymous for many with "personal computer."

Well, to answer the OP's question, I believe it's called iPod touch as not to cause brand dilution.

However, I think the iPod will become less and less of a name brand due to the iPhone. I think a lot of people find they are happy not having their entire music/video library with them, especially as they find ways to stream video and music on the iPod touch and iPhone, and I think people will be more and more satisfied with having one convergence device. Basically, I think the iPhone will grow and iPod market will shrink. Which is why I think the iPhone should have been called iPod mobile. Just because the iPhone is so much more than a phone (actually being a phone might be one of its lesser feats at least in the US ;) ) And the iPod is a cool name because it is sort of open ended like the word Mac--it seems more extensible.

And here I was thinking that if I called my iPhone an "ipod phone" it would just become festive and happy.

So the first rule of the iPod touch / iTouch is ......... don't talk about iPod touch / iTouch?

:D

Heh, something like that. Until the mods finally put their foot down and decreed that arguments over iPod touch / iTouch are off topic, every other thread in this forum used to devolve into people bitching at each other over "iTouch." It was pretty ugly! :D

i personally say iPod touch (or "the touch", or more commonly "my iPod") but i really can't stand it when people say iTouch (one of my biggest pet peeves is when people pronounce words differently than i do) but i'm not one of those people who jump all over someone else when they say iTouch. it's just stupid to correct someone over something so small.

I use 'iThink" to cope with this problem :D

Yeah, not so much...

Had you searched, you would have found the other thread that already had this discussion.
