Samsung released the S8 and Note 8.
Do you really expect Apple to release the 7S/7S Plus?

It would be fun to see if the next Samsung Phone is called S17 and Note 17.
Just for fun.

I'm not bashing the phone. As things stand out the moment the 8 Plus is the most desirable phone to me out of the 3 new ones. I'm just confused over the naming of it. It's the same form factor as the 7 so why not call it the 7S and then come up with something new next year to be the iPhone 8.
It's the first time they've ever broken with the S naming method and it's on a phone that is very very similar to the one that came before it, I'm just not sure I follow the logic.

It's all about marketing and setting the perception in people's heads.

Had they rightly called the phones the 7s/+...the average consumer on the street would think "Whoa, this new phone is a definite step behind the ipX".

Apple needs have as strong as possible sales on the standard models.

The ipX is simply too expensive and production too constrained to subsist on those sales entirely.

So this is the Apple we have today...they released a new design which was rushed and lacking (in some basic areas) and charging a nice premium for it (that they never did before) and they raised the cost of their standard models without really justifying it (in my mind).

Small wonder why I'm staying with my 6s.

Agreed. Samsung skipped the Galaxy Note 6 name and went straight to Note 7 to align with the S7 series, but to also not appear one generation behind the iPhone 7 lineup. And now Apple skipped the 7S and went straight to 8. It's like Apple and Samsung are toying with each other. I wonder how Samsung will name their devices in the future now that there is an 8 and X, not to mention we don't know what Apple's naming scheme for the iPhone will be for next year.

I think also it's because of Samsung's naming convention; and I predict that the next iPhones will only have roman numerals (so the next iPhone will be iPhone XI, so "iPhone 11") and the design of the iPhone X will be the only one to be continued; the iPhone 6 design will be discontinued.

And man, I hope iPhone XI will support FLAC in the music app

It’s just a marketing name. Who cares? Honestly Apple should never have started with the S nomenclature. Plus this idea that something is only new if it looks completely different aesthetically is nonsense.
