Those who feel there is no need for auto-correct would hopefully have enough common sense to know basic grammar. The OP needs auto-correct and the stellar excuse of "i was also not paying much attention to grammar and spelling to further prove my point", ranks right up there with "I cheated on you because I was drunk."

In other words, it's a childish reaction to being called out on your blatant errors and inability to write past an 8th grade level.

you know, I don't find that all that many people seem to post from their mobile devices.

Maybe .... 1 in 10 posts?

I'm regretting posting in this thread already, but...

FWIW, posts are only tagged as "Wirelessly posted" if they're made using MacRumors Mobile Edition. Posts from an iPhone using the full / normal forums.macrumors.com look like any other post, albeit perhaps shorter and with worse grammar, depending on the poster. ;)

I think anybody with a general knowledge of the English language and a spelling competency of higher than a third grader would greatly benefit from the auto-correct because of it's ability to determine the word you're trying to spell by the general location of your key presses. I don't see any good reason to disable it unless you're trying to be "hip" by talking ebonics or street or whatever it's being called, at which point I can see it being extremely annoying.

As far as the "niffer" story goes, why would Apple have the word you're suggesting programmed into it's default dictionary when every other cuss word has to be typed countless times before it learns?

Ah, I see. I assumed all iPhone posts had that small text at the top.

And ya .. this thread is a little bit useless. I guess it's just meant to be funny ... ?

Well, Blue Velvet did start a tradition of a "Friday Chatter, to be Wastelanded at the end of the day" thread...

i hate the auto fill part of it though!! someone asks if i wanna hang out or something i say "Na" (sounds nicer than just No? lol) and it auto fills and puts "Naked"... damn iPhone i didnt want her to get that!!
The correct spelling is 'nah'.

'Na' is something else.

I disabled because a lot of times it changes my intended word.

Just an idea...

I understand the gripes about auto-correct. I don't like it when I'm trying to text or e-mail friends and wish to use short versions of words or slang. I understand that people would want to turn it off, and therefore, make more grammatical mistakes.

However, perhaps there should be a feature like automatic spell check. Like in Word (and many other applications, including this site), if a word is spelled wrong, it would underline it in red but NOT change it automatically. This would be the best of both worlds. People would see where mistakes are made, but not be "forced" into changing them.

Just a thought...

Yeah ... or just a list of "known words" you could manage would be good too.

This is an excellent idea. It would make much more sense to simply be reminded of our errors rather than Apple automatically making it their way (there's a new concept...).

They should just make a button the keyboard (like a shift key) so that when you want to type words the iPhone won't know or short forms or what have you, the iPhone will not auto correct what you type. Then, just hit the button and you're back to auto correct goodness again. Turning it on and off from the settings is utterly useless as far as I'm concerned.

A managable list of "known words" would be a start, but an easy way to temporarily disable auto-correct would be much better. A list of known words only works for words you type frequently. But for instance, what if you suddenly needed to type a paragraph with lots of foreign words/names in it? You want to turn off auto-correct just while you are typing that one paragraph, then turn it back on when you get past that paragraph and are back to typing regular English.

ETA: Oh, and I just remembered, it would be nice if, for similarly spelled words like we'll/well, he'll/hell, etc, a selection box popped up and allowed you to pick which word you meant to type.

This is exactly what I was getting at. You just said it better. :p

I would much prefer an onscreen alpha-numeric keyboard with T9, far more user friendly and much quicker to type on than the QWERTY one.

Many of these have little shortcuts. Type welll (3 L's) for " we'll " and see what happens ;)

Thank you for making me aware of our ability to turn off self-correct

What bugged me most was the fact that I could not abbreviate English words or write in any other language. I definitely don't need self-correct: I have learned to correct myself.;)

I turned it off, and not 5 minutes later turned it back on. I never realized how dependent on it I am. I love the apostrophe s in auto correct.

After all the complaints we saw about how the iPhone wouldn't let users disable autocorrect, it took less than a week after the feature was enabled for someone to complain that people can disable it.

Just for that, I hope the iPhone NEVER gets copy/paste or MMS. :D

Yeah about that... Just a question TheSpaz is this thread a joke or...?
