honestly...i made a thread just like this a couple weeks back.

I feel like the iphone is slowly getting passed by other phone makers in teh Screen department.

I have played with a few HTC phones particularly...and the high resolution of their displays is amazing..its like looking at printed text or a photo.
If anyone gets a chance to look at the new LG enV Touch....it has two 3.1 inch screens on it, both are 800x480...amazing dot pitch..
now if the iphone was upgraded to that kind of resolution with the same current size screen....id be in heaven!

and for anyone complaining about the pixels being too small...check this out!

Most people can live without something they yet to have. But, once you have it, you can't believe how you could live without it.

iPhone screen looks nice enough and very adequate, sure no complaints, but if you compare it to latest high-end screens, it's no match.

We all want it. We just don't want it at the higher price or at the price of something else like battery life, etc.

Unless APPLE gives up $199/$299 pricing in US, iPhone will never be the best hardware spec phone. But, most iPhone users wouldn't care about that and that's the magic of iPhone.

Yea, devs are going to double their development costs to make a better looking game, and then go and ignore the 40,000,000 consumer base to sell their expensive game to only 2-3 million. That's the best business strategy I've ever heard! /sarcasm:rolleyes:

i wonder why apple even bothered to upgrade the graphics chip then if nobody is going to use it to its potential? (see i can do it too)

I agree that a higher screen resolution would be nice. The Blackberry Bold has a screen that is physically much smaller than the iPhone but has the same resolution, and it looks REALLY nice. Guess we'll have to wait until competitive pressure from RIM and Palm force Apple to think about increasing the screen resolution.

I somewhat understand the argument that you don't want 3GS-only apps and want to help maintain backwards compatibility with older iPhones, but at some point there will have to be a departure. Imagine if Apple never substantially upgraded the original 128K Macintosh out of fear that people would only write apps compatible with newer Macs, leaving original Mac owners out in the cold?

High-resolution screens, on the 3GS would dramatically reduce battery life. More pixels means more rendering, and especially with game usage, much much less battery life and performance dedicated to non-graphic-processing tasks in the iPhone OS.

So maybe they could've made the screen a higher-resolution, and I'm sure it's not a bad thing to improve DPI, but it should be done at a time when CPU/GPU speed and battery life is more abundant on the iPhone (as in, not now). Maybe in a couple years.

Umm the battery life and responsiveness wouldn't really go down much if at all with an 800x480 screen.

Cortex A-8 can easily drive an 800x480 screen and most of the devices using it have 800x480 or higher screens. It is also 20% more efficient so you get more power for less battery drain. I guess apple doesn't see a reason to upgrade the screens but they will be hurting when the other big name phone makers start pumping out the high res phones.

yes because we all know that all the new phones coming out are going to have higher resolution screens

gee I wonder what resolution the palm pre has

this is a losing argument, just give up

I bet next years iPhone will bump up the resolution. I mean, how many more features can they really add? At some point it'll just be like new Macbook releases -- faster processor speeds, more ram, etc.
