It's the hardware. It's not a normal camera sensor, due to the way it takes a photo. Jailbreak and use cycorder with sound if you really want.
Till then, await v3 which will very likely have decent video options.

Aurial - some of even the best new cameras out there, if you move them about can't do smooth video recording...

We might be talking about tech from 2005, but then don't forget 3G was tech from yesteryear too, and that (decent) 3G coverage hit the US shores recently...

You're absolutely right. The US seems to be slower getting phone technology than we lucky Europeans. But then we get it some considerable time after Asia generally. I'm still suprised that they went as low as a 2MP camera though. And I was dumbstruck when they stuck with it for the 3G.

You're right about camera flicker when moving digital cameras, but I think you'll find its particularly bad on the iPhone camera if you compare it side by side with another camera/phone.

Just Think

You can record video if you jailbreak.. so why doesnt appl make an app:
1. Battery Life
2. You Tube - if we have video recording everyone would want to post your video right to you tube. At & T's network sucks to much for this to be a reality.

I believe the video recording is possible, but everyone will want more when it comes out; you tube uploads, video messages.....

to much to worry about for now... wait for iPhone the 3rd

> You can make videos with cyrecorder but you need cydia...

...anybody have a link of sample vids us non-jailbreakers can view ? ...if the
quality is good then apple should have it or at least allow 3rd party to release
their own...

I dont but the answer that video would be 'crappy' quality. Holy crap! Have you seen the quality of the pictures with just the camera? They're horrible - yet Apple implemented the camera anyway...

Something I've noticed about Apple is a company is that they're not in the least bit interested in what their customers want, only in their own agenda.

They do seem to make decisions based on their American partner AT&T's network. But I would say that now that the phone has gone global the majority of their customers have much better 3G and HSDPA than in the US anyway.

Sorry, little rant.

The thing is, I've noticed that people have been going on about features they want since day one of the iPhone (e.g. copy/paste, MMS, etc, I'm not getting into that), but instead of implimenting them they spend their time changing the look of the 3G logo at the top of the screen and silly things like that.

I think if you want video recording you're going to have a long wait. Might be better to say you don't want it and they might give it to you.

Battery life is not the reason. Baring in mind that 2 megapixel cameras are technology of 3 years ago I think that the quality when shown against todays 8 megapixel offering would be an embarassment.

The camera just can't cope with the frames per second needed for smooth video recording. Just switch it on and move it about and you'll see. And its not even recording anything!

The fact is that the camera of the iPhone is bad. We're talking technology from 2005.

False false false. I have a video camera on my iPhone 3g and the quality is great for a mobile phone. Even at night. The megapixel has nothing to do with it.

You can always add it to youtube from your pc. Thats not a valid reason not to have it. Other ATT phones can do video messaging right now. Whats the big deal. Its not new technology.

The quality is good enough. Search youtube. Keep in mind that you tube videos have reduced qulity than the original video.

It's the magapixels and quality of the sensor.

It's great for a mobile phone compared to which phones? You're only getting 15 fps with Cycorder aren't you?

The iPhone camera takes crappy photos. Video would be worse.

Is your statement. Based on experience or ignorance. Have you used video on your iPhone? I have video on my iPhone and the quality is great. Based on the iPhones crappy camera i thought video would be very poor but I was pleasantly suprised.
