I think that one possible reason for not launching iPhone 5 is simply that iOS 5 is not ready.

Several of my hard core ip4 friends moved to android and the love it. Perhaps a change in OS's may spark some new interest.
Funny, several of my friends are back on an iPhone 4 after playing with Android phones. Started out like your friends: wanting something more than what they got with iOS. Now, it seams, they appreciate the simplicity and polish of the iPhone experience over the rough edges of Androids...

My guess (and its just that) is that the iPhone 5 has been done for some time now but they are not going to release it until iOS 5 is ready. The two will come hand in hand and thats why we are still waiting. Also no rumors because it is locked down tightly.

With millions and millions unemployed alot of people have their mind on something other than a new phone.

If the iPhone 5 doesn't have a bigger screen I am not buying. I'll just keep my iPhone 4. I looked at some pictures on an HTC the other day that belong to a friend of mine and I was blown away by the size and clarity of the screen.

I am sure the software on the iPhone is better but damn they need to do something about the screen.

-Better screen (as in AMOLED, but i know that's not going to happen with the iPhone 5)

There are many things they could do without going to AMOLED. And do remember that even the latest AMOLED lags behind the iPhone's LCD screen in some ways. For instance, the iPhone 4's screen is about 50% brighter than the Galaxy S2's SAMOLED+ when measured and has more accurate colors with less battery usage.

I'll be very happy with the iPhone 5 screen if they can figure out a way to make the contrast better and eat up less battery. Also a .2-3 extra diagonal with less bezel would be nice too.

With all the rumors and talk on various sites about the A6 processor, buying an iPhone with an A5 chip makes no sense at all.

Especially since they're also talking of the A6 being introduced along with the blended iOS & OS X mashup.

So if you really need a phone because your current one is on it's last legs, or you have money to burn on a temporary A5 placeholder product, it's wait for the best of Apple in the form of A6.

Waiting is one huge money saving opportunity, thanks to Apple.

No way in hell Apple delays the launch of the iPhone 5 just to get a speed bump and better camera. It's just not logical to do that. We know (almost for a fact) that it will have the A5 chip but the probabilities are very good that they will add some of the following: a larger screen, HSPA+ bands NOT LTE!!!! (Apple will not call it 4G just to take a jab at AT&T), T-Mobile 3G bands and/or carrier unlocked, wider-area touch sensitive home button, LED notifications, iPad 2-like speakers, etc etc etc

Nah, the A6 processor is just a placeholder until A7, which of course is just a placeholder until A8, and so on. It doesn't make sense to buy any of them unless you know you're going to die the next day. Then you can buy the one that'll last the rest of your life. ;)

I'm willing to bet some money on this:

- Larger screen
- A5
- HSPA+
- Improved camera

No way Apple makes us wait longer than usual just to increase the speed of the iPhone 4. Second, the lifetime of the new iPhone will be at least one year. Can you imagine Apple's top model being merely a speedy iPhone 4 whilst Samsung is spitting out 4+" 720p AMOLED-screens with quad core CPU's, 4G networks, 8 MP super cameras, etc.? Again, no way.

I've had the 3G, 3GS and currently the 4. To be honest, I'm very interested in checking out the new BB 9900/9930. I think it looks pretty interesting, although I'm sure most of you would disagree.

I did try an atrix, on another line of mine for a little while and I hated android.
I had the BB 9800 torch and didn;t like that either. The BB 9900/9930 will have a new OS as well, so could be interesting.

Few things that come to mind that they still could do:

-4G
-1080p video recording
-Better microphone(s) for audio recording, stereo!
-Desktop internet browser. I´m sick of the mobile browsing experience, it´s just horrible!

larger display
dual core cpu higher res camera's
better resolution display
3D cameras
solar charging
biometric scanner
NFC
Augmented reality
thinner lighter design (with either carbon steel or carbon fiber)

innovation hasn't come to a slow.

I'd be really interested to see NFC and 3d cameras(along with the augmented reality that could come with that) in the next update. Besides the obvious dual core processor, the other technologies would be amazing but I doubt they'll be ready by the fall in the form factor Apple wants. But hey, you never know.

October unfortunately.

Is that the US or international release date? I'm seeing so many mixed information. Hopefully iOS5 and iCloud is released in September with the iPhone 5. I'm in desperate need of a phone.

Well that´s exactly my point. I can´t think even myself what they could do with the iPhone anymore. They pretty much did everything with the iPhone 4.

And the fact that they didn´t release the iPhone this summer proves also, they are running out of new technologies and need to delay the game.

I´m starting to think iPhone 5 could be first iPhone I´m going to skip. I mean what can they do with it anymore?

The fact that they didn't release a new iPhone this summer proves nothing. We've said it many times here, Apple very well could just want a release cycle closer to christmas time.

Also there were talks of chips overheating, but idk about that.
