How many phones are they selling without these features that "everyone wants"?

Exactly.

So what? that doesn't mean Apple should stop innovating and finding ways to improve their product.

People say MMS is a dying messaging format that can be replaced by email, but why not just have the ability to do both? Flexibility and the freedom of choice is great. My mom will most likely never fork out for a smartphone that is email capable, let alone be able to figure out how to use such a device. For such reasons, MMS will never be "extinct".

Do you have any evidence to support such a claim? For example, an iPhone App developer claiming their application was rejected by Apple only to learn Apple released a very similar app on the App Store?

Well technically they can't say anything about the App. That might just be until it's actually inserted into the store, but like i said, i'm pretty sure that if someone made an application doing exactly what the remote did, and Apple had PLANNED on releasing it's own, why would they allow the other persons in the store when they have there own?

No one really knows, but you just have to assume that's the way it could be with some apps.

Proof I think you're wrong: Apple released Texas Hold'em but also allowed a number of other poker games on the store, including Real Deal Texas Hold'em.

We all know Apple is working on something that is going to blow our minds away maybe when 2.1 comes out? Who knows, we just need to wait and be patient.

But I do think the bitching and the moaning helps just a little...;)

Uh, yes Apple made a Poker app. So?

We're talking about features. Apple was FIRST do make it. They are going to allow other apps like it, it's the purpose of the app store, because of it's diversity.

Apple WON'T release an App though that is planned. They would rather do it themselves, and have it done "their" way. Then, after there's is out, it's up to them to allow more apps like what that does on the store. It's their choice.

Well, I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree. But I feel my evidence provides proof of the opposite of your assumption.

You can actually email photos to phones that only have MMS. Every phone on every carrier has an email address tied to it. Go search the forum and you'll find a list of carriers and how to email a phone at each one.

No. You. Cannot.

I don't understand why this keeps getting passed around as fact. It isn't true. It applies in the US. Virtually no other country in the world does this, and operators usually deliberately block it to increase messaging revenue.

It's as stupid as the idea that MMS is "dead" when the amounts of MMS being sent are going up.

Unless we have numbers for how many they'd sell with them, the answer isn't terribly relevant.

We know that hasn't happened because the SDK doesn't allow anyone to make an MMS app - MMS requries deeper baseband access than the SDK allows.

That's why there isn't third party app, incidentally...

To be honest, those in the UK, with O2 have it better MMS wise.

If O2 got it's act together, they could actually do the processing themselves. Email O2 with the number you want to send to, it converts the picture, then sends it, or make an app out of it (i.e. the conversion of a photo to the right dimensions etc, then emailing to the phone/O2 to route it). (Not that they would... Heck, the Blue book doesn't work for the iPhone yet (which would be kinda handy seeing as MobileMe stilll sucks currently).

Ok, my bad, I sometimes forget there are a lot of international members on this forum. I know that the email workaround is pretty much universal for all carriers in the US. Sorry to hear it does not work overseas.

Look, I understand why you're upset. MMS does seem like a simple thing Apple could add, but they don't due for no other reason than their arrogance. If you have no workaround, then you are left without any way to send a photo to another standard phone, and that just plain sucks.

I believe Apple probably will add MMS soon, but there's frankly no excuse for making us wait over a year for it.

I vaguely recall at least one fairly solid rumor on a tech blog a month ago showing that it was in the works, but who knows if that was real or faked.

Clearly lack of MMS has not stopped hordes of people from buying this phone, but as time goes on, people will start complaining more loudly about the little missing things, and hopefully Apple will listen.

MMS is an outdated and dying stopgap application.

With more and more cellphones able to access email, there's less and less need for MMS.
People who say they need MMS actually need better phones, or they need the patience to see a photo on their browser when they get home and check their email.

I've realized this when i kept sending my friends pictures directly to their emails, but didn't think anyone else noticed the MMS>email migration...
I only have a few friends and family without a Smart phone now.

How many average people know it doesn't come with MMS or video? I did not know about it until I actually started reading up on the iPhone. Some people are impulse buyers and will just buy, then be very disappointed.

I knew everything the iPhone could and couldn't do last summer when I bought mine. I waited a week and purchased mine on July 6 just so I could find out if the phone was right for me. The things it couldn't do I never used on my old Treo do it was never a big deal for me. I still don't care about MMS but I would think that if Apple doesn't think of it as a priority that they could allow an app to do this for people who want those things.

We will never know what Apple has planned however.
