It is still expensive and will be for a while.
But if you need and have the cash, why not go for it?

I remember some people bought the 16GB DDR3 for 600$.
The price came down to under 100 in less than a year.
So we still can expect it to come down. But obviously not just in a year or two.

1TB is not enough.

actually 2x 8gb ddr3 when it launched was 1k

nand makers are starving the market again, thats the problemm they want to keep the prices in plateaus and then the fall, rinse and repeat

I remember OWC sold it over 1k.
I meant when they started to come down but was still expensive at that time.

1TB is not enough.

Yeah I understand, I dont have enough sapce as well.
But we just have to accept that until new technology comes out.

there may not be sufficient channels for the nand to work properly and some other things. For example the OWC 1tb SSD needs to use 2 Sf2281 controllers, if Im not mistaken the OCZ 1tb one as well

but we are moving out of sata 3 soon, pretty soon actually

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6293/...end-to-proprietary-ultrabook-ssd-form-factors

new formats for SSDs in ultrathins

and these are the new satas

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6294/breaking-the-sata-barrier-sata-express-and-sff8639-connectors

and I hope they improve the speeds and consistency, its quite not right still

I don't think anyone is going to notice if they have two controllers in there. Eventually they'll figure out how to go bigger with one. The progress has been fantastic, even if we continue to have 2/3 of the progress we've seen in the past couple of years, I'll be super excited about SSD technology!

they already have with the new marvel one that equips the plextor m5p and the crucial m500

and its not about feeling, its about need

We have advanced so much over the last decade its not even funny, at this point the only thing holding back parts manufactures from giving us 12-core processors and 8tb drives is the economy. it will get there but don't expect the boost to be anything like the early 00's

if I remember correctly ivy EX will have 12 cores on some of them
and given the reliability of those 4tb drives I want distance from larger sizes

I thought we wouldn't see 12-cores till broadwell in 2015 when me and marty mcfly go and get some milkshakes on our self tieing jordan retro 5s

Travelstar 5K1500

Schweet! Hopefully others will follow. I'm still a bit nervous to buy IBM/Hitachi, even though the rational side of my brain tells me that they have basically no connection to the infamous Deathstar drives.

I bought one Deathstar, who died relatively quickly, so I was uneasy about a Deskstar soon after, but that happened once a very long time ago.

And now you have things like the latest Ultrastars which I think are way ahead in MTBF relative to their competitors.

Everything happens in time.

In 4-6 months I'm sure we will have 2TB 2.5" drives, and 6TB 3.5" or something crazy.

128GB micro-sd will be a thing soon if they aren't already, who woulda thunk that 3 years ago.

There are already 2TB drives in the 2.5" form factor on the market today, refer to this.

Yes but no.

Look at the height. 15mm. That will not fit a Macbook. Max height possible is 12.5mm. That's why I didn't include that.

Because we were discussing Macbook drives that's why I said that. A 12.5mm or less 2.5" 2tb drive does not exist, as far as I know.

Just out of curiosity, what are you people doing with your laptops to where 2TB of local storage would cut it but 1TB won't?

What are you keeping on the drives that has to be with you at all times and can't be offloaded to external/nas storage?

I know everyone has different needs, but I'm just curious.

Yes exactly!

15mm fits within specifications of a 2.5" notebook drive. The WD drive is great if you don't mid carrying it in a slim enclosure. There are already on the market today, it's just a matter of time before we see smaller variants.

Alternatively, Bitcasa is a great option if you have a high bandwidth connection.

A 15mm will not fit in the Macbook I thought.

What I said was that 15mm is also classified as a notebook drive as per drive standards. It doesn't mean it will fit assuming you have a unibody MBP.

Click here for a great resource with pictures of what drives will / will not work.

Fit note – Please note that the only 2TB drive that exists currently is a 15mm high drive. This means the drive is actually approximately 1mm taller than the drive bay in your Macbook Pro. With this drive in your notebook, the bottom panel of your computer will not fit perfectly flush, as it would with a 12.5mm drive. It WILL protrude on the corner which houses the drive by approximately 1mm, which is very little, but not perfect. You can see an image of the effect below to judge for yourself. Photos in this post are of a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13. I have also done this install in a 2010 Macbook Pro 13, and the drive bay is slightly deeper, so the fit issue is almost nonexistent – perhaps .2mm

True. Backblaze uses them because they have had the fewest failures with those as opposed to WD or others.

Given WD's latest advancements, I had a little suspicion, and yes, the Travelstar 5K1500 has 3 platters, so its performance should be in the same class as the Aquarius or the usual 1TB 5400 RPM drives.

I will wait as long as I can for 7200RPM, or at least 5400RPM standalone hybrid, or denser 5400RPM, bigger than what is available now.

But now that there are 2 sources for similar drives, Apple would be able to offer 1.5TB in the MBPs, even if one product is taller than the other.
