The obvious next step for WD would be 4 platters in 12.5mm
No one cares about mini external drives. The 9.5mm drives are the only ones that count.

I currently have a 160GB SSD and a 640GB hard drive in my MBP. I want to upgrade, but the upgrade to a 1TB is pretty minimal. Why has no one figured out how to stuff 2TB in a laptop drive? That would be a HUGE upgrade. I have 11TB of external storage and backup space, but I want more for photos, which I always have on the laptop.
If I have to, I'll go to a 480GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive, netting me 680GB of additional space, and move some stuff to externals.
12.5mm drives fit properly in the MBP, and I guess some PCs.
Yeah, but you have to remove the sled or something, and then it's not fully supported or something weird. I'm sticking to a properly installed drive, which is limited to a 9.5mm drive in an MBP.
Honestly, I'm more interested in a 2TB 9.5mm 2.5" SSD.
They need another bump in areal density for that.
SSD, not HDD. They're already up to 980GB, it's just a matter of time. Given that they can make a 64GB Micro SD, I have to believe that they could do a 2TB SSD, it's just a matter of what limited market there would be for a drive that costs well north of $1k.
There's a new 9.5mm 2TB Samsung/Seagate hard drive.
