Do you want a quad-core 13" rMBP?

  • Quad, what?

Is it possible Apple will upgrade the 13in rMBP from all dual core CPUs to quad core or do the thermal constraints prevent them from doing so? Quad core CPUs would really help the longevity of the device.
Of course not. How else would apple get people to buy the 15" MBP?

Don't believe me? Look at how Apple gimped the Mac Mini, because they saw people purchasing the mini, instead of the higher revenue Macs.

i believe, in apple's mind:
13" -> most of average users, who want portability and some performance.
15" -> enthusiast/pro users who want plenty of power at cost of added weight/size.

in their view, there's not enough reason to offer a quad core 13" laptop.
this without taking into account all the thermal implications and so on.

I understand the conventional wisdom presented here, but Intel has reduced power usage for the Skylake mobile processors. They now offer quad-cores that have a TDP comparable to the Haswell dual-cores in the current rMBP.

I think the i7-6822EQ in particular could be a suitable 4-core for the 13" rMBP.

The current 13 inch Macbook Pro uses broadwell not haswell

This was discussed not that long ago -

It was interesting, I learned from it but the topic goes on ad nauseam, in my opinion.

While difficult, putting a 45W quad-core Intel processor into the 13" laptop form is possible. Sony puts the same quad-core Haswell processor used in the low-end 15" MBP in the Vaio Canvas Z 12" tablet. However, in the thread linked above, nobody could come up with a 13" quad-core laptop currently being sold by the major manufacturers. There are 14" quad-core laptops available that are gaming-oriented. Intel has a i7-6822EQ quad-core processor which takes 25 watts. The problem is that it's 2.0Ghz and has a lower-end iGPU.

So it's technically feasible, but none of the major manufacturers, Apple included, perceives a demand that they believe is worth their effort to produce.

LOL so since Sony did it that means Apple can? First off who knows if Sony just makes it throttled? Plus 14 inch gaming laptops are thicker than the Macbook Pro and uses a lot of heat pipes to dissolve the heat. So what's your point?

razor has a nice slim quad-core 14" if they can do it, damn sure apple can as well.

Quad-Core Space Grey 13" with Geforce 980M, I can dream right?

That is 14 inches...... That is also some more space to allow them to dissipate the heat. The 980M will never happen unless you want a battery to last you an hour tops. What people don't realize you can put in a Quad core cpu and the Nvidia 980M inside ( realistically the 970M is better value since its cheaper and not that much worse than the 980M) but A) needs more space to add heat pipes to dissipate the heat and B) Battery life... Apple wants 9 Hours for the 13 inch and if you added a Quad core CPU it will make a big dent into that battery life.

If you can find articles that the Canvas throttles on a regular basis, we'd be interested in looking at that. In the multiple reviews I've seen, people used the Canvas for extended periods of time, running CPU intensive programs and it didn't get hot (either in the temperature readings or what it felt like on the case). The engineers just did a good job in designing the thermal system, using three fans to help cool the computer. There are a lot of smart people at Apple, why wouldn't they be able to design something like the Canvas, especially since they've done the Canvas? As I mentioned, I don't think it's the technical challenges, but the marketplace/business challenges that prevent Apple and the other computer manufacturers from producing 13" quad-core laptops.

Interesting - I just saw that Sony sold Vaio to a venture capital group and the Canvas was produced under this new ownership (although Vaio's are still sold through Sony in Japan).

That is often the case; you can engineer a solution if you're not going to recoup the costs and make a profit because of limited market then it is not worthwhile to expend the time and money to develop a solution.

Apple like many Apple is about "up sell" a Quad Core 13" MBP would deter many from purchasing the 15" so I seriously doubt we will ever see a Quad Core in the 13" rMBP, as Apple has absolutely no incentive to do so. There is effectively no competition in the OS X environment the Status Quo will remain the same indefinitely.
