It's Apple's form of gentrification, make the poor get the low end model, and make the well off get the highest end model. No in betweens.

Well at least they threw us a bone this year and upped the bottom tier to 64GB  I was all set to pay $749 for a 128GB 8. I'll settle for 64 now.

Does anyone with a 128gb phone use all that space? 64gb isn't a downgrade when you're getting the flagship phone. It's the sensible option if you don't need more than that.

I have a 256 and was maxed out on storage. I did a clean up and could really only free up 60gb. I need more storage

Anyone thinking with going with base X for 999 and getting a lightning flash drive? I need more than 64GB but I don't need 256GB. My current 128GB 7+ is enough storage.iCloud storage is cheap but you need to be online to access it. Anyone thinking of going this route?

I don't know, carrying around a flash drive to save 150 bucks on a $1000+ device seems pointless.
[doublepost=1505292428][/doublepost]I have a 128GB 7 now and I am at 40GB with 19GB photos and the rest apps. I have store in iCloud when space runs low, but it doesn't need it. I wonder when iMessage in iCloud becomes reality just how much space do we need. I really think I could get by with 64GB, but I will go for the 256GB model X. $150 on a $1000+ plus device is nothing.

That might be a good idea.
I'm also disappointed by the fact that the X is not available in a 128 GB version. I'm currently on a 6S Plus with 128 GB which suits me just fine, capacity-wise.

I use around 95 GB. I've done quite some cleanup yesterday (mostly apps) and will probably delete most of my 9000+ photos. :D Let's see if I can squeeze my current usage into a 64 GB. This will determine if I upgrade at all from my 6S Plus to the new X.
Perhaps if people complain long enough Apple will introduce a 128 GB model next year... we've seen that before. Right now they want to max out on the new hype. But on the long run, they need to be able to satisfy all potential customers.

You pick what you need, out of what's available. My 6 Plus was 64 GB, but that was not an option with the 7 Plus so I picked the 128 GB instead. I'm still using just ~40 GB of that space, like I was on my 6 Plus. I don't need more with my present usage, and if I was looking to upgrade this year I could just move back to 64 GB.

But yeah, on Apple's part it's definitely a combination of more careful use of what memory chip supply is currently available and trying to get customers to slip into higher storage tiers. I don't blame them for trying, but it doesn't work on people whose aim is not to max out their storage.

That's not true. There is zero evidence of a better managed iPhone product line up here. We have currently 8 iPhone models on sale which encompase a crazy large number of SKUs. Removing 2-3 of them is not dealing wth the issue.

This is the solution as said by Steve Jobs in 1997.

Another “evidence” is that the iPhone 7 is still being sold but only in 32Gb and 128Gb versions, no longer offering a 256Gb version.

It’s significant because you have a combination of colors and memory sizes. Apple is always trying to fill all price points (as they did with iPods way back).

So we have:
1) two memory sizes vs 3 sizes before (in all 3 models, 7, 8, and X)
2) no product red version
3) only two colors for iPhone X (versus 4 colors when iPhone 7 launched)

But if you wanna call it “zero evidence” than it’s up to you. The amount of SKUs (if you know what it means w/o googling it) is key for inventory management.

The new HEVC/HEIF format will save a lot of space for everyone... so Apple is “giving away” memory for all users.

very simple answer: to pile up Apple's $ 200.000.000.000 (in reserve)

I'm amazed it took until this post to hit on it. Greed.

Tim Cook stands there eulogising Steve jobs, and then delivers smaller still upgrades to a product with 'features' that have been on the market for years. And then gouges the customer and removes the most popular storage size. he brings shame to the brand

Did you actually watch the video at all? It's not about SKU's overall, That was just a side point added in by Jobs. Jobs called for less product lines to exist so the ones left to exist can be better managed, better developed for and have a better turnover cycle.

The number of SKU's are important for inventory management but that's not the whole picture. Also there is 5 models for sale now. (If you know the difference between SKU's and models w/o googling it)

So we have:
1) 5 models of iPhone for sale now. The most at one time in history. (SE, 6s, 7, 8, X)
2) More overall SKUs. In the past older iPhone models were discontinued. Now they are not.
3) Two new models of iPhone with all new technology announced at the same time. A first for Apple. The 5C was older hardware when it launched alongside the 5S)

I have 200GB of iCloud storage for $12/year, so worst case I have to offload some pictures on there. Then again, I only have about 8GB of songs on my phone since I mainly use Spotify and only downloaded a few of those (~3-4GB). Personally I think the screen isn't really worth it to download movies onto my phone, I prefer a tablet for that or a TV. I'm not saying they shouldn't have increased storage, but most people will be fine with it.

Memory storage on an iPhone is completely user dependent. I don't think there's a one size that fits all. Even if 64 GB of memory is An entry level storage, that may be more than enough for some who want to upgrade. But not everybody needs 128 GB of storage as well. I can easily survive and 32 GB of storage, but that's enough for my needs.
Sure but at $999 starting price for the iPhone X, 128GB should've been base capacity.

Completely agree. I mentioned in another thread that having 128 GB of storage would have been far more enticing as an entry-level, but it's so odd to have 64 GB or 256GB. Fairly drastic difference with no in between storage.

Makes the jump to 256GB seem worth it I guess. We used to pay $100 for increases of 16GB after all.

128gb should of been the starting point for the base iPhone X considering the price at $999 or £999 it makes it slightly easier to justify the end price but with 64gb it's much harder to justify even if you know 64gb is enough for you.

Because Apple thinks you either want the bare minimum, or gobs of space.
At least bare minimum isn't 16GB anymore. They were stuck on that for years even as run of the mill apps grew from 20-50MB to 200-500MB.

Why is there not a 128GB option for the new X? Guessing it is to force users to spend more to go for the 256GB option? What is the Apple reason for not offering a 128GB option?

Yep, justifies charging $149 instead of $100, also makes the decision harder and entices more to go for the larger space model. I don't see much use in the larger space one as Apple really gouges you for cloud space. I just have all my pics/videos automatically uploaded to Onedrive and never worry about space on the phone itself.

Although for $999 128gb should have been the starting memory IMO. But Apple has always been very cheap with memory, heck who can believe a 16gb option still existed a year ago with the SE?

But I still think 128 should have been an option. 64 is pathetic. and 256 is unnecessary.

Ridiculous statement. If 64 GB is pathetic and 256 GB unnecessary then according to you the only option people should have is 128GB?

Are you aware of storage requirements of 4k video and the simple fact not every user should be subjected to the exact same usage for their phones?

You already said it. It’s to force the end user to spend more.

Guess we can agree to disagree.

You certainly have a valid argument but IMHO the number of iPhone models furthers my point of Apple needing to reign in SKUs (different variations of same iPhone model).

It’s not a coincidence that 3 iPhone models (iPhone 6S, 6S plus, SE) share the same internals. It’s not a coincidence that the 2017 iPad shares similar internals (A9 is much faster than A8 and comes with much faster MVNE storage). Same thing happening to the iPhone 8, 8 plus, and X in terms of sharing internals (up to a point).

I a, positive the goal of any modern corporation to grow, both revenues and profits. To hit many price points and cater to audiences in Asia, Emerging markets, G7 countries, young and old, Apple needs different models. Apple silently brought back the iPhone 6 in specific markets.

But to increase profits, Apple needs to reign down on costs. Love Steve but he is no longer there. Jeff williams and Tim Cook are. One has to put how they think/operate into any analysis of why Apple is doing what it is doing.

The intro yesterday was great (and brought tears to my eyes and TC’s). SJ is Apple but, as any of our offsprings, Apple will continue to evolve.
