I also hate the tap to click option. I have a hard time believing people actually like it.

The "old" trackpads always felt like they required too much force. Actual click versus tap click is like fingers on a chalkboard for me. Obviously a very personal preference. ;)

For me, it isn't that I like it, but it just doesn't work for me the other way. I don't want to use my left hand to click the bottom of the trackpad, and I don't want to move my right hand finger down to the bottom corner to click, either. Some people might just mash on the thing but that's not for me. So I use the taps. When I replace the current MBP with one that has the new trackpad, taps will be off.
 
I'm equally puzzled by this hate for "tap to click". I use both of them, I honestly don't see what the problem is. If it wasn't for tap to click, my mom's busted MBP trackpad would be useless.
