What is the primary way you hold your iPad?

Mini user here. Always in portrait except for watching videos and for certain apps that are specifically designed for landscape.

12.9 with silicon case smart cover just doesn't feel right in portrait to me. It's simply too tall. I use mine landscape almost exclusively whether it's resting against my knee or propped up by the smart cover on a tabletop.

iPads are basically a paper replacement for me - reading, writing, and browsing the web. All of these things are better suited to portrait orientation, and the iPad is the best tablet on the market in large part because it's the only one that has consistently been 4:3 IMO.

Portrait at all times except video and typing with the Smart Keyboard (even then wishing there was a portrait mode).

Especially drawing - even on the Surface I could never draw in landscape, always had to be portrait (which is the primary reason I bought both the SP3 and the iPP 12.9).

It's funny - to me, landscape just 'feels weird' for anything but videos.

It is way more comfortable to hold in portrait, imo. While using it in landscape mode the weight is too heavy because of lever effect

Are you sure you don't mean using in *portrait* causes a lever effect?

I also use my iPad in landscape. I also us the camera for teaching internationally/ meeting with our overseas relief workers via FaceTime and Skype. I've been "complaining" since iPad 1 about having to turn the iPad at a weird angle to use the video in landscape. Don't get me wrong, I love Apples ecosystem so I keep living with the weird angle. Even Apple's own cases are designed to work in landscape. Count me in as one that wished the camera was in landscape.

iPad 1 didn't have any cameras.

Portrait mode at all times except video. I actually went looking for an iPad mini keyboard case or keyboard attachment that would attach in portrait mode because when typing portrait mode lets me see more the doc. Sadly there were none to be found, I ended up getting the apple keyboard and using my iPad in a separate stand in portrait mode.

Because the iPad isn't tall enough for me, in most cases, if I don't hold it in portrait mode. It's also more comfortable to hold one-handed in portrait mode because of the laws of gravity.

If I had a 13" iPad, that would probably be different. It might even be too tall for me.

I really liked the idea of the original iPad Keyboard Dock that Apple made, and I still kind of want one.

I use it in both portrait and landscape. Depending on what I am doing one or the other is better. For example, portrait mode is definitely better for reading.

Yeah, I read books in portrait, but stay in landscape for almost everything else.
ETA: now that I'm using the pro & the pencil, portrait is also great for writing.

Why is the iPad still designed as a portrait device? Those of you who own iPads, what is the default way you hold it? I NEVER hold it portrait. Why not move the FaceTime camera to the top in landscape view? Why not put the home button on the bottom of landscape? I'm just wondering, does anyone default to portrait mode when they use their iPad?

At this point, any change in design to one with a camera at the top of landscape would probably come with a friendly subpoena from another company such as Samsung which holds patents on that type of design. There are so many patents out there now and I wouldn't doubt if that is what keeps Apple holding onto the original design with only changes in dimensions being the major difference.

I believe the Surface also has a landscape camera.

I wouldn't say that it's designed to be used in portrait. Camera and button placements don't really change that. That said, as somebody who also never uses their iPad in landscape, I love the position of the home button. My hand is usually on the right side holding the iPad, so I don't have to move it away to press the home button.

I would Photoshop one up but people would laugh at my skills. I would be interested in seeing how it would look design wise.

Your admission of personal bias negates any credibility of your first statement.

If it was designed to be used in portrait I would think the home button would be on the side instead of the bottom. I use the four finger swipe to go home. Plus if the home button was in the middle on the side it would be more difficult to use in landscape, you would really have to reach for it.

I personally would prefer 16x9 ratio because the bars you get when watching shows/movies is ridiculous. The 9.7" screen loses about 1/4 to 1/3rd of screen space on top and bottom if you are watching any kind of iTunes hd content.

The 12.9" Pro is the first iPad that makes it bearable to watch any kind of iTunes HD content.

The 4:3 ratio is one of the things I like best about iPads. Much better for web surfing and document viewing. I can live with the black bars on videos.

At least with iPads up to the Air, the viewing angle seems less vertically when in portrait orientation. The screen turns off color at an angle which makes it not as nice when it's laying in your lap or on a table.

Landscape when I am teaching, because that's the aspect ratio of my classroom projector (4:3), as well as browsing the web, watching youtube, gaming and using split-screen mode.

Portrait when I am reading, such as web articles in reader mode.

Portrait:
Browsing, reading, email, word, excel, procreate (switch around a lot though)

Landscape:
video, split screen, RDP, splashtop,

It's not just for playing videos, if that's all you care about you should go elsewhere. 16:9 tablets are so unwieldy and a stupid waste of space for anything but video playback.

Portrait when it's appropriate.
Landscape when it's appropriate.

Yes, there are certain apps where one is clearly preferable to the other-- but being locked in to one mode or the other by case design or app design feels almost as constraining as trying to use the ipad while it's plugged in.

The 4:3 aspect ratio of the ipad ensures that portrait mode is wide enough to feel natural.
