Wow, didn't realize. I have one for sale if anyone wants. Just PM me. I got my 3g iphone and my other one (16gb) just sits there. Maybe I'll sell it on ebay. I almost gave it away to someone until I caught wind of them trying to take advantage of my ignorance to their high value. People ...I tell ya

Sorry to go offtopic, but if you're still selling it contact me at soyasauce11@gmail.com

when 2g iphones were sold, they were sold in on-line stores and no in-store sign-up is required, making it possible for people to drop in and buy in bulk from apple stores and then unlock it at the price of just the handset-$399 or $499. however with the iphone 3g situation has changed, customers are forced to sign the contract and in-store, which means they cannot escape the contract even if unlock is available. this makes the iphone 3g very expensive on ebay and countries that don't sell it-you pay together for the phone+a 2-year contract which the seller has to sign in-store. hope this explains...

This is quite puzzling to me. Since a new one's been released, the demand for the old version should drop and so should its price in the market. Someone care to enlighten me on what's going on here?

But it's good to hear because I hope to sell my iPhone 3G in the near future (1 year?) for a good price so that I can use that money to buy a newer, updated version. :p
why would demand drop for the only iphone that can be unlocked and is no longer available from retail?

I just sold my 1st gen. for $300 cash a couple weeks ago. Of course the buyer already had one for himself so I'm sure the one he bought from me was a gift or more likely he unlocked it and then resold it. But still I cant complain there's a demand for the slightly used 1st gen iPhones because the $300 cash just about covered the cost of a brand new 3G 16GB phone. If you have a 1st Gen. and can still make some good money on it why not? As stated before, if you do not live in a 3G coverage area or you are unlocking the device to use on T-Mobile then the 1st gen. EDGE iphone is well worth paying a few bucks for.

What do you mean better build quality?
My 3G has no cracks, no yellow screen, and looks way better than that metal crap.

Heres why people go with the iPhone: they're just too poor to afford 3G service. choosing EDGE over 3G is like choosing dial up over DSL, but a lot of people do that so who am i to judge

MINE...and ONLY MINE...reason, is because my cuz gave me his old SIXTEEN GB iPhone for free when he got the 3G...he thought it would go for close to nothing on eBay..lol...sooo im good..:D

I bought my iPhone for $305... I could easily turn around and sell it for the $400 most are going for, but I like it too much.

Thats sooooo logical

First off, 3G is like what? 10 dollars more? Second off, apparently, everybody lives in a city and gets 3G service, eh?

Heh precisely. Even if I had no disposable income, I could sell my original iPhone tomorrow and probably have enough left over to pay many month's worth of the extra cost for the 3G contract.

I still don't get why the prices are still where they are for the 1st gen iPhones. For those buyers of the 1st gen iPhones, wouldn't they have bought them new for around the same price before the 3G phones were announced? They are basically paying for a used phone now compared to buying the same phone brand new a couple months earlier. Am I missing something here or did those potential buyers not have a seller in the US market to sell to them? For those with T-mobile, couldn't they have bought the 1st gen iPhones when they were still selling them online/in-store after hearing about the capabilities of having the phone unlocked?

I'm still confused...

I happen to agree on some of the points Col Ronson made. I can easily afford a new iPhone 3G, but there is no way I am getting it. It feels cheaper to me, and I don't need the 3G at the moment since wherever I go there's wifi. The only thing I would be getting it for would be the GPS. I've been to the Apple store a couple times to check it out when I'm at the mall, and just can't wrap my head around how cheap it feels.

Amen

whats confusing? no they couldnt get ahold of one at the time as apple stopped producing them, and people are now looking for first gens because they need an extra, need a replacement, think they will be collectors items, all of the above?

Disclaimer - dont read if you may take offense if you have a 2nd hand v1

This is going to be a very bad way of putting it but sadly is the only way.

2007 - Rich people ge tthe iphones v1, "peasants" don't get an iphone.
2008 - Rich people pass of the iphone v1 to the "peasants" ones and get the 3G. The "peasants" are now getting the v1, so technically the iPhone has been released into the new market....

Its different if you bought the v1 first hand and have just kept it . Assuming the reason is anything apart from cost .

This make no sense. I bought 2 iPhone v1s BNIB (4GB & 16GB) and I've only sold the 4GB and plan on keeping 16GB till iPhone rev 3 because I'm not interested in the 3G. So where does your classification put me?

i'd have thought that a major contrbutor to the V1 value is the fact that you can run firmware1.1.4 unlocked, jailbroken and activated for any carrier.

1.1.4 is more stable, faster and can host applications such as background running IM (Fring) and - shock horror! - MMS!!

lets face it - the 3g unit is cheaper made, bigger and not actually that much better. The 3g reception isn't "that' important - the camera is still pre-historic and the bluetooth stack is deeply immature - and it still isn't worth the minimum contract rates £35 ($70) / month here in the UK.

I'm guessing there are a lot of people like me out there - it's not a case of 'affording it' - just that it simply isn't 'worth' it.

LOL @ trying to compare a mobile thats been out for a year to 1 month.

I promise you

"1.1.4 is more stable, faster and can host applications such as background running IM (Fring) and - shock horror! - MMS!!"

this was not the case a month after the iphone v1 came out :)

The only people I have ever heard say this are the people who simply cant afford to switch to a 3g contract.

With a first generation iPhone you can run firmware 2.01 unlocked and jailbroken. I suspect the convenience of the App Store far outweighs anything installer or cydia can offer for most consumers.

But again, this returns to the fact that GPS and 3G just aren't that great and if unlocking is important then a first gen is the way to go.

I suspect a lot of people agree with me that the lack of curvature and metal back on the old phone looks a heck of a lot nicer. I suspect the original will be held to be something of a design classic compared to the new iteration. Obviously this is one of these subjective opinion things, but I imagine there are a significant chunk of people who feel like this.

But likely the main issue is that the old phone is unlockable for other networks and international roaming.

This is true - the 3g model is still new - but then we are having this discussion today - not in a years time when things might have changed and (granted) the V1 might be obsolete.

I still think that the 3g isn't 'worth' buying into - but then I wasn't a fan of the original tarrifs either. I bought an iPhone 1 in January and just unlocked it - it has my £15 / month SIM in it and I'm happy with that.

I don't think the App store is worthwhile either to be honest - all I really wanted was a bloody MMS application - which is still only available on 1.1.4

oh and a decent bluetooth driver - which isn;t available anywhere yet :(

1) the 1st gen iPhones can be unlocked

2) the 1st gen iPhone can be used on a pay-as-you-go plan, for people with less then wonderful credit.

I just sold my V1 8gb iPhone to a guy i know, i had the original cables, dock, headphones, box and even the special iPhone bag i got with it, even put all the clear plastic wrappers on :) he was well chuffed with it. it was in perfect condition, i did jailbreak and unlock the baseband because he wanted it on Orange.

I sold it for £120 ~ $230 :) I have a Nokia N95 8GB which is a real phone and does more music and video formats so i just use that now.

All this talk about being 'too poor' explains exactly what is wrong with society today. Spoilt little brats that justify why some people in the word have built up hatred towards other people.

Go enjoy your sweet 16 little people.

£120 when it was worth £220 :D
