How did this subject even arise?

The iPod Touch with 3G phone capability WOULD BE A BLOODY IPHONE.

No, there would be no camera, no bluetooth, no microphone, no speaker - none of the stuff that phone users are used to - and if they made it EDGE that would differentiate as well but extend the useablity.

well there were many speculation threads a lil while ago everyone was throwing ideas out and 3G kept coming up few of us kept sayin noooo then all of a sudden this thread started really.......... what a lovely bubble these people live in lol

Hmm. 'Why the new iPod Touch will essentially be an iPhone' ... ;)

I guess if you want GPS and 3G, you should probably just buy an iPhone.

and youd be right.

we told you OP, apple doesnt like making products where people have to decide between two things that are aimed at the same market!

this is one in the eye for the OP HA HA we told you no 3G or GPS

I must say, listening internet radio is great while driving....:p
opps sorry touch can't do that....ma bad!

get an iphone, op....
that's your only option....

Form a line with your baseball bats - one at a time only please.

But hey, where's the fun in life if you don't go out on a limb every now and then and have a gentle argument or three? :D

On the other hand, while I went out there with 3G, a lot of people thought GPS was likely and it seemed like everyone thought there would be capacity bumps!

All we got instead was 'look at these great games' and 'we made the edges thinner'. WTF?

at least your taking it well mate, a true aussie there

GPS would have been awsome, as long as we didnt have to pay all of the rates and whatnot :p

I still don't get why people think the iPod is going to overtake the gaming market. I mean, I saw that Need for Speed and man, it just looked horrible, graphics were good, but the gameplay looked bad, he was using Nitros and he wasn't moving anywhere when he was looking at the walls. If the iPod can make a game like SFAlpha 3 and play great, then yes, it could be a good gaming device. I still say its mostly good for waiting in line games, (sudoku, puzzles, cards, etc)

Wow, how stupid is the OP? How old are you? Rewind to before yesterday. Do you honestly believe that Apple would put these things in and they make business sense or were you just HOPING that Apple would throw in GPS and 3G?

Pre-paid data packs would fix that - just as pre-paid phone SIM's currently work.

wow everything you said here is all wrong, and everyone disagreed with you....... and they were all right. i still dont understand why you said that the ipod touch would have gps and 3g........ lol and anyways i ordered one the day it came out!!! :D yeye

i daresay that NFS is still in production and that there are a few glitches, its not out yet so maybe the final product will be more accurate?

come on the ipod isnt a PSP, it doesnt have the necessary buttons nor hardware to be able to run proper games. yes it can stand in as a ****** one (aka gameboy) but not the real thing..

This may change that.

it may. however you need a hacked ipod. apple isnt going to support nor bring out its own product if it stole it from someone who hacked their own product.. that will only get a small target of the actual market

There's also this, which may be officially supported by Apple.

Yowza. VENGEANCE!

I was never sure why 3G or GPS would be in a new iPT this year, maybe in 2011. But there was one vituperative moron here screeching about how the new iPT would NEVER have a speaker and a mic because it would 'cannibalize' iPhone sales... now there's a speaker, and the mic is sold separately.

Eat it.

The speaker was totally obvious - so you can hear games.
Over the next years they'll probably work up iPhones and bring down the tech bits and pieces to the iPT. Next year I bet the camera jumps onto the iPT, then GPS in 2010. 3G in 2011. I have no idea where they are taking the iPhone next, but I'm sure they are working out all sorts of bells and whistles to keep it new & exciting.

Fair enough DoFoT9! ;)

FYI though, the short, short version:

Regular GPS waits for the GPS sats to send the receiver all the position info about the location of every sat in the constellation (called The Almanac) before it can then use the timing signals to do all the tricky triangulation calculations. (You have to know where the timing signals are coming from to work out where you are, right?) The sats have very low transmission bandwidth so getting this info from the sats takes 3-5 minutes when you first switch on - hence the wait when you fire up a boating or hiking GPS unit.

A-GPS fetches the same info in seconds via the cell phone network. (The US Govt makes it available that way too). So the phone gets the crucial satellite positioning info in seconds and then only has to listen for the constant timing signals before going to work on the calculations. Bingo - position found in 10 seconds.

A-GPS also increases reliability in cities. Tall buildings make it harder to receive the signals from the satellites. The long Almanac transmission is the most likely to suffer interference as you move around. Get it via the cell network and all your phone has to listen out for are the timing signals - which are short and frequent and therefore easier to pick up, even in downtown NY.

ok so i bought a tom-tom 2day.. what type of GPS does that use to connect to the servers/blaa blaa blaa?

Gps should be expected but internet for free i dont think so. Its like getting internet where i live for free! Do you really think apple will do this?? If your cellphone has bluetooth you could get a data plan and the new ipod touch will have blue tooth im pretty sure there will be some way to pair them toghther to get internet on the ipod touch from the cellphone. :D free 3g may sound dumb but u in future it might come free :)
