I'd say by the end of the year, IMO. There's always going to be some seedy manufacturer in China that will make knockoff bits to open these up, licensed head, custom head, or whatever else Apple decided to go with.

However, anything is better than phillips.

I'm gonna say within a couple of days of release. If Engadget was able to tear it down, won't take iFixit long at all.
 
So I just got my iPhone and it turns out that it does have the standard phillips head screws rather than a Torx derivative. I wonder why the production photos showed torx screws, maybe european iPhones have the Torx screws, either way I am much happier if I ever have to replace the battery myself.
 
Mine (launch day) had the five-point screws, as does my replacement. Any idea where I can buy a bit for it?

I hate to bump this thread, but I'm still looking for a solution. Both my launch-day iPhone 4 and the replacement I got a week later had/have the five-point star screws. Any idea on where I can find the appropriate driver?
