Its good you know.

I've set up Mail for my GMail account, set the view to view by thread (just like GMail does, set up my colours and alerts, set Mail to fetch new mail every 5 minutes.

It is definately the faster option to use Mail rather than GMail on the web, especially when it comes to sending attachments.

I agree with everything everyone has said about the app :)

I've thrown a mod onto mine that splits the windows vertically, ULTIMATE for widescreen machines (MBP).. looks a treat.

What is the mod for vertical splitting? I would be quite interested with my 24" wide screen! Thanks :)

Does anyone know how to create groups within Mail? For example, I have email groups(people's addresses) in Gmail but I haven't found a way to create groups to send to in mail.

I haven't tried it yet, but a quick search through Mail.app's Help turned this out:
To send to a group of people, create a group address in Address Book, then use the group address in your email instead of the individual addresses. See Address Book Help for more information on creating a group.

Ditto -- what is the name of it? Someone mentioned mail.appetizer, but I don't think that's it (I have it) -- the only thing m.a does is give previous of incoming message headers, a la MS Outlook, except, unlike Outlook, the preview stays on the screen. I find that quite annoiying actually -- I'd rather it just flash for a few seconds, long enough for me to know if I should bother switching to the mail app to read the message.

funny question. let me think:

online:
open web browser
go to the email site
enter username/password
(have advertisement everywhere)

mail.app:
do nothing

Well to be fair us gmail users don't see advertisments ;p

Also if you have an account prone to junk mail, mail.app does a very good job at picking them up.

I remember reading a comparison between mail.app and thunderbird a while back, the guy used the same account on both applications for a month (I can't remember the exact length of his test) and he found out that mail.app picked up more junk mail/did a better job than thunderbird.

Since then I stuck with mail.app as well as consolidating all my things to one email address with no spam ;]

I for one have 5 different e-mail addresses - don't wanna have to log into five different accounts each and every time.
Ya know, someone suggested I add in my other accounts to mail.app (I've kept just one email account per mail.app per computer ) and I was reluctant to. But this thread inspired me...

I spent a good chunk of time this morning adding a new account and re-organizing my mailboxes and all that sort of stuff. I'm really impressed.

I loves me some Mail.app. :D

I'm glad you went through with that. I've done it with my accounts, too. It takes a massive amount of effort (easily 20-30 seconds per account) but is well worth it!

Before you know it, you'll be using smart folders, too.

I couldn't agree more... I did the same thing a while ago, and I haven't looked back since. Most of my mail only comes through one of my accounts, though... and, of the 4 accounts I have set up, 1 hasn't yet gotten a single message :p

well, understand your point, but a little bit over simplified.
if you have ur email page bookmarked and username/password remembered, it is just two click away.
and for email client, u still need to open the app. not "do nothing"

well for my Gmail account I just have to open the browser and click on the bookmark and it automatically logs me in. and there are not any anoying adds.

I have multiple accounts so Mail is great for organising them into one, plus it is so simple to use yet very functional. One of the best parts of OS X in my mind.

I just started using mail.app b/c Thunderbird quit sending messages to my school's e mail server. So I started fwd'ing all of those e mails to gmail and now gmail is fwd'ing to mail.app. What I'd like to do now is set up a way for all e mail from [school].edu to go to one place, gmail.com another, and other domains to a third.

Is this possible at all?

Thanks for any help and for the inspiration to switch clients. I'm still posting on Firefox, so I'm not fully on-board with Safari yet...

It's a way nicer (and easier) interface than anything you'll find on the web. I don't have to open up the browser just to check e-mail, which is nice. (even if Safari is open 99.9% of the time, anyway) Notification in the dock is another big plus.

The main reason, though, is simply that I just love using it.

I like using mail but I wish the "organize by thread" feature would be a lot better. Very often it organizes it but adds emails from months ago that might have a similar subject. Also many emails I get have blank ones and those ALL get grouped together.
