There's really nothing in this thread that hasn't been endlessly rehashed in the countless prior threads on screen protectors but here goes nothing...
hey all, i was wondering why do people need to use screen protectors?
It's a subjective matter. Depends on who you ask. I can't stand scratches on the screen. I can't speak for others who may have entirely different reasons or those who don't see the point in using screen protectors. Why does it matter? Why do you feel the need to tilt at this windmill?
I thought the whole point of using glass on the phone was because it was highly scratch resistant.
For the Nth time... Scratch resistant != unscratchable.
I would think anything hard enough to scratch glass, a screen protector won't protect it that well.
Screen protectors are sacrificial parts. They take the damage so that the screen does not. You can think whatever you want to think. It doesn't jive with my experience, however.
And screen protectors don't protect against drops.
Right. That's why they're called screen protectors. They're not intended to do so. If you want impact protection then find a suitable case that offers impact protection. Use the right tool for the job.
I also thought they detracted the look of the iPhone too. So is there a reason to use screen protectors? The only reason i could think to use a screen protector would be to use one of those "private" screen protectors to block wondering eyes.
All subjective matters. If you don't see the point then don't use one. Plenty of others (including me) do see a point. My screen protector does not "detract the look of the iPhone". Don't assume that all screen protectors are the same. Do whatever works for you.
So basically if I trust myself enough to know that I won't drop my iPhone 4S, can I go without a case and not have any scratches on my phone?
Not necessarily. First off, there are no guarantees. Second, drops aren't the only cause of scratches. As someone pointed out earlier in this thread, all it takes is a grain of sand or any material harder than glass (not keys) to come in contact with the glass). Still, it's a judgment call that you need to make. If you prefer bare glass and you think it's a non-issue or you're willing to deal with scratches then by all means go without a screen protector.
I started thinking about this and realized.... why bother covering up your iPhone's screen, and degrading your own usage of your device by altering how it feels and looks (no screen protector is 100% invisible)
My screen protector does not degrade my usage of my iPhone but I carefully selected the screen protector to meet my needs/wants. If you feel that all screen protectors degrade your usage then don't use one. Simple. Again, it's a subjective matter. Stop assuming that your preferences are universal.
In any case, your couch analogy doesn't work. My iPhone's screen isn't fabric and I don't sit on it. Plastic on my couch would affect my usage and enjoyment of my couch. My iPhone's screen is hard glass. My screen protector isn't hard glass but it's close enough in appearance and feel that I really don't notice any difference in day-to-day-usage. Again, YMMV.
OK, I have a phone too and it never scratches itself. So I have no idea where you get your facts!
He's citing anecdotal evidence (just as you are) which isn't the same as a fact. Read up on the matter.
