Ok - try this - don't know if it will make a difference, but it is worth trying. Hit Ctrl/Alt/Del on your Windows computer. This will bring up your Windows Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab, and check to see if the iTuneshelper and the iPodservices are listed. If not, then go into your control panel and click on administrative tools. Click on services and scroll down and find iPodservice. If it isn't started, then start it. Also, go to your programs folder under my computer. Find the iTunes folder and click on iTuneshelper. Now do the first step again and make sure both of these 2 things are now running. If so, then plug your iPod in again and see if it does anything different. Again, don't know if this will help or make a difference, I just know these are both running on my machine and I would think it would cause a problem if they weren't. My guess is these are already running on your machine as well, but it is worth checking.

Thanks for the reply applebum. I have made sure the iPod service is running (i.e. started and automatic), and the iPod helper folder is full of various .dll's.
I have also tried enabling disc mode in the pod, by resetting and then pressing select and play at the same time- still no go.
I have seen several threads on the net about this problem--- just wish one of them had the fix! I mean, something had to happen to make this happen...
I'm currently resisting the urge to give the thing a good smack and see if that helps....
