One has to wonder why they went for a plastic phone at such a high price? Could have easily went for a steel or aluminum phone and maybe dropped it to a 5mp and used an A5 chip.

I wait the tear down video which will reveal the real cost of the Iphone 5C.

My guess is it's plastic to make the more expensive metal one look better.

Why would you buy a 16GB phone when you can get a 32 for a little more?

Some people would just prefer the different colors, particularly kids and teens. Also, people seem to be overestimating the number of people who buy phones off contract. Tech people do, but most don't. This may be anecdotal, but I don't personally know a single person who buys phones off contract, everyone has a contract. So a $99 iPhone in bright fun colors is pretty attractive for a large group of people. Maybe not for you, but Apple is not targeting you. For the average customer, the way a phone looks may be just as if not more important than its specs and features. The 5C looks really attractive for a large group of buyers who previously may have not purchased iPhones, and that will lead to massive sales.

Yes. The intent of the 5C is nothing more than offering color. So much so that Apple <gasp> even put a "C" in the name. :D

Because it's too simple and blatant. People want Apple devices to have more meaning than this. Even to the extent of reading between lines that aren't there.

And I do understand that. I've been a fan of Apple products for a long time and always await these new releases with enjoyment. I also love the new technology that often comes with the launch of new products.

Like you say, people want their Apple products to have more meaning than this. That's why the 5S is there isn't it?!

These two phones are there for two very different markets. If you don't like the 5C then it isn't you that it's there for. So why can't you get over it.
