Why do you have to have AT&T for both iPad and iPhone?

Nothing wrong with having AT&T iPhone and Verizon iPad. Better that way IMHO, because you will have more diversity of coverage in low-coverage areas.

With the new data sharing plans it may be a good idea to have both devices from the same carrier to get cheaper rates. AT&T announced back in May that they were considering plans similar to what Verizon just announced.

I was all about the Wifi until I went and finally signed up for a data plan. Best thing I could ever do no regrets.

My issue with Verizon is that their prepaid reactivation seems like a sketchy operation. There are lots of reports with people who have said their Verizon iPad SIMs have stopped working after cancelling after a month. Lots of other reports say that if you don't reactivate after 60 days, the SIM goes bad as well, so you'll either need to call or go into a Verizon store to fix it.

For an occasional data user like me, the prepaid, as-needed data is one of the selling points of the 4G iPad. I won't want to be on vacation somewhere and try to activate the data, only for Verizon to tell me I missed the window by 5 days and I have to go in to get my SIM replaced.

I travel every month for at least 3 days for business. My tech kit includes a laptop with a 3G card, iPad2 wifi, iPhone 3GS, TP-Link WirelessN travel router. My favorite hotels offers wired in room ethernet, so the router can serve the laptop, iPad and iPhone. I see the advantage of longer battery life and lower costs in just wifi on the iPad, since one month of a data subscription would pay for the travel router.
