You probably have tried this, but have your iphone 5 forget network. Next power off modem and airport. Wait a few minutes. Power up modem, power up airport. When fully operational, reconnect iphone 5 to network.

That worked for me great for about 15 minutes. Then back to the same old thing.
I'm on the latest gen airport express.

Very misleading. I have an Airport Extreme and guarantee it works better than your Asus.

The catch is, it'll cost you about $170, the price of the Asus RT-N66U router. :)

I looked this up on Amazon, and was warned that a newer model of the device exists: RT-AC66U. I know newer is no always better but I was wondering if you did any research on the newer model? I also want to upgrade to a new router and not sure what to get. The AC66U costs more money but I'd get it if it has improvements over the N66U.

EDIT: it seems the new model supports the new "wireless ac" standard (as opposed to "N"). So maybe it's worth the upgrade. Though there aren't probably many "ac" devices at the moment, the article I was reading claims Apple will be an early adopter for wireless ac.

I have a Linksys N2500 and no problems here so far. As a matter of fact I set it up with Talkatone and the QoS settings and its doing great...so far. I have the 450 rollover minutes AT&T so trying to conserve my minutes at home for awhile. I have my main number with Google Voice so thats why I'm using Talkatone at home.

I have a 2 year old Airport Extreme which works well with all iPhones, but coverage over the entire house is spotty due to AE being in basement. So I'm buying a new AE for upstairs and connecting both of them via Cat5e to create a roaming network.

How is this done? would you use the old AE as a plain router and the new one as an access point only?

Wait a second! What you're telling me is that if I buy a router that's newer than mine and more expensive, that I might get a better wifi signal?

That's freakin' genius!!!

Thanks smarta$$! :)

I never said it was ideal, or that the 5 shouldn't work well with all routers. I simply shared that once I did upgrade my router, my wifi issues disappeared completely, and if someone wants to solve their home wifi issues and for whatever reason doesn't mind upgrading their router, it will very likely solve their problem.

I think the antenna of the 5 works better with newer, current generation routers. That's not to say they can't tweak the software to improve its performance on other routers. But in my case, I kind of wanted to upgrade my router anyway. So, yes, I guess it was genius, and I don't even work at an apple store.

Hahaha...fair enough. I guess your thread title was just a bit mislead (and appeared intentionally so).

For the record, I am glad that you got it up and running and all is well. :)

I use the new airport express out in the living room and I have the old airport express plugged in in my room to extend it. No issues at all! I can be across the street at the car wash and still get a low signal from my wifi!

5th generation (latest) Apple Airport Extreme here.

Via 801.11n 5GHz, I get 47.3Mbps down and 28.4Mbps up (via Fios) on my iPhone 5.

I'm quite satisfied.

I have a dual band Linksys and was experiencing WiFi issues with my iPhone 5. I was able to fix it by making a couple changes to my router configuration.

-gave 2.4 Ghz and 5.0 Ghz different SSIDs
-made sure that my iPhone 5 doesn't connect to the 5.0Ghz network

Now my WiFi speeds are consistently high. It seems that the issues are related to the 5.0 Ghz band. Your mileage may vary, but this worked for me.

I use the AT&T Uverse router that came with my Uverse service. (Yeah, I know, I know...)

Never had a single problem with i5 and the WiFi. :)

I wouldn't knock it. My parents have one. I was visiting them last winter and found myself suddenly receiving emails across the street, with them living on the 9th floor!

My iPhone 5 kept disconnecting from my router (which my iPhone 4 has/had no problem connecting to/staying connected to). I tried reseting Network Settings, tried rebooting my router, rebooting my phone. Nothing helped.

But I figured it out. Here's my fix, and maybe it will help some of you with issues. I manually added my wifi network to my phone's settings. Under wifi >> add other >> manually type in your SSID and password. I haven't had a single problem since.

Modern routers really help for gadget houses. I was holding out on some cheap older WRT45G routers running tomato software. I recently upgraded to a new Linksys EA4500. Performance is incredible and the signal quality is much better. 3 LED tvs streaming 1080P via Plex samsung app and a couple macbooks surfing and still not a problem. It really helps when the router has 6 antennas to push/pull data on.

I had been having problems with my iphone 4 connecting to my routers wifi connection for months.

When i did a speed test on my internet connection on my pc it showed that i was getting approximately 7mb download speed.

My iphone was showing as connecting to my routers wifi connection but when i did a speed test on my iphone it showed a speed of not more than 500kbps.
Also, the wifi connection would drop frequently for no apparent reason.

It seemed obvious that my iphone was not using the wifi connection speed but i did not know what was causing the error because it showed that i was connected to my wifi from my router.

I was getting better speeds from my 3G connection than the wifi which was just not good enough.

After reading the last few posts i decided to check the settings in my router via the usual Netgear web page. All i did was to de-select the 'up to 300mbps at 5Ghz & 54mbps at 2.4Ghz' option and then select the 'up to 300mbps at 2.4Ghz' option.

Then i had to enter my wifi password into the iphone and it connected right away and when i did a speed test it showed that i was now getting the correct 7mb wifi connection speed.

So it appears to have been resolved for me, hope this may help others with a similar problem.

Cisco, the parent company of Linksys, makes GREAT enterprise-grade networking gears.

However in the consumer department... AVOID AT ALL COST.

WNDR3700 v1 running DD-WRT here, couldn't be happier, OpenVPN and PPTP VPN is a plus for me.

The Asus RT-N66U and the Asus RT-N56U are both brilliant routers, have them working flawlessly with my iPhone 5 and getting speed tests results of like 80mb which is amazing as my iPhone 4 would not manage over 18meg!

I have the ASUS RT-N56U and love it! I tried the new Cisco Linksys routers and they simply sucked. I have my Asus running with this firmware and is working very well.

time capsule working great with iphone 5.

Best investment I've ever made in my home network. Flawless wireless and hands off backup of all my OS X computers.

You use the new Airport Express as an access point only (Bridge Mode), and connect it to the old Airport Express (which is your primary router and handles things like DHCP) via network cable. It's all explained here by Apple; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260

You can do it without the network cable as well. Takes less than 60 seconds with the config tool on the iPhone or any OS X device.

Their wireless equipment may lack a lot of features but damned if they aren't the easiest and quickest to configure.

I had two of those routers die on me. Neither lasted more than a few months and Asus customer service is non-existent. Their router software is also buggy as hell. fast when they work though and good range.

Spend the $160 on an Airport Extreme at Amazon. Also very fast with great range and stone cold reliable.

Had both, both were fast with great range when they worked, both died quickly, both had terrible support.
Check the ASUS OR Smallnetbuilder forum and see all the complaints.
