Looks like this app doesn't even work with a 1st-gen iPod Touch... every time you try to install it you get a "not compatible with this device" error message....

For now, I say just bookmark Wikipedia's iPhone-specific site--it's nice. But this app could get good in time
Is this the main page that you are talking about 'en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page'. When I type in that page it usually goes to the mobile page.

Or Can you post the main page link here ? Thx.

I'm with the majority here. This initial release is a step backwards from the Wiki Mobile I've been using for a while. Going to remove from my device but keep in itunes to follow updates.

Strike one...

http://en.m.wikipedia.org is iPhone-friendly and works great--and as you note, it's automatic by default.

Another good reason to choose the Wikipedia mobile site instead of any app: then you're already in Safari where you can simultaneously open other sites on the topic you're investigating.

I have been using wiki mobile and wikipanion they both seem better than wikipedia mobile. Go figure.

Yeah this sucks and makes no sence at all!
If you run iPhone OS 3.1 beta3 the message you get on a first gen ipod is 'you need a microfone for this application'?

Common, a simple Wiki app and you need a microfone?
This is soo stupid!!! The same thing happens with Duke Nukem 3D.

Never the less you can install both apps ;).
Download such apps with iTunes on your Mac or PC, download the iPhone Configuration Tool from Apple (for Mac or PC), locate the apps in your iTunes library and copy them to your Desktop.
Change the .ipa extension into .zip and extract the files.
Open the unzipped folders and locate the app.

Launch the iPhone Configuration tool and install them manual to your iPod ;).
I installed Duke Nukem this way & I'm sure it will work with this simple Wiki app!

BTW: Duke Nukem runs just fine on a ipod first gen.
Any slowdowns on some devices will be solved after the 3.1 update will be released in a few weeks. Greets.

I don't get these kind of applications.

Open Safari
Tap the google search bar
Type "wiki ____" with whatever you're looking for
Click first link

It's easy.

They are. Even more so for using wikipedia.

So where do you go to get a quick summary on topics you may not know a lot about? Here, I have a wikipedia article for you:

Encyclopedia. History books. Newspaper and magazine searches.

The idea behind wikipedia is sound but the practice loses much as disinformation and the wrong information can and is posted. People take it as fact without verification even when it's dead wrong.

Wanting to rely on accuracy and research is not superiority complex, it's seeing wikipedia for what it's worth.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A400 Safari/528.16)

The app store icon is the same as the mobile version!!!!!!!

Funny. I always thought the idea was ridiculous, but works surprisingly well in practice.

People take it as fact without verification even when it's dead wrong.

The same can be said about television, newspapers, books and scientific papers. These are all created by humans with imperfect knowledge or an agenda.

Relying on a single source of information is the problem, not that Wikipedia is inherently less reliable. At least Wikipedia makes a great starting point for finding more sources.

Its fine for a quick look-see on a topic, say, what the hell are "EGFR antibodies". You may get an answer a fraction of a second faster than using Google.

The quality of the info, like anything in the internet (including MacRumors) needed to be regarded with health scepticism.

Agreed. Name-calling and insults are for the true intellectual :D

Encyclopedia. History books. Newspaper and magazine searches.

Somebody should make an app or mobile Web site that puts all of those in one place in your pocket. That would be great!

However, if you want the kind of confident accuracy you're talking about, I think you should exclude newspapers, magazines, and history books. And take encyclopedias with a big grain of salt--use them as a jumping off point to help you on the way to more verified sources. Like the way I use Wikipedia. You can never turn off your brain--you must always cast a critical eye on ANY source.

What you need is primary sources, not the things you name. Until that app comes out connecting to primary sources that cover all topics, Wikipedia passes the "useful" test :) You can't deny that Wikipedia is often VERY useful. Flawed, like any human endeavor. And yet useful. In fact, for all its weaknesses, it also has unique strengths that no other source has.

(Nobody's thinking of using it to decide death penalty cases, luckily.)

Meh. The only reason I wanted Wikipedia apps in the first place is because there wasn't a iPhone/smartphone formatted version of the website. Now that they have that, I don't find any reason to use the apps. Have Kiwi and Wikipanion — Wikipedia in Safari is faster, and formatted better. One thing I liked about Wikipanion is search, something mobile Safari could really use.

I paid £6 for Encyclopadia

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=288141564&mt=8

which is basically an almost complete download of Wikipaedia onto your iPhone, taking over 2GB. Am reasonably happy with it - it contains most articles and I wanted to get it for reading in the tube or when abroad or somewhere with no signal.

Also the sheer geekery of having the complete (almost) wiki stored in my phone in my pocket :)

Odd, paying for something that's freely available, but it's the same price as a few bottles of mineral water, and that's free from the tap.

Bummers are that if you have in-depth knowledge about something, it probably won't have the highly specialised article you wanted. Also the discussions aren't included, which can be one of the most interesting parts :)

Wikisabotage

I interject "defenitions" as I see fit, on a regular basis on Wikipedia. They sometimes dont catch on for days... But still it can be entertaining to have a topic come up and have your friends groan when you have the answers on the iPhone. iPhone groan.
