The 3GS does have the same GPU as the 4 right? It's just the processor is ~200MHz slower. Not to mention the 3GS has 4X less pixels than the 4.

You are forgetting two crucial aspects: battery life and RAM. First of all, the iPhone 4 could take a small hit on battery life since there's such a big battery; the iPhone 3GS cannot.

Secondly, the iPhone 4 has got 512 MB RAM. And if history tells us anything, when it comes to iOS devices RAM is more important than CPU clock speeds.

Don't forget the iPod Touch 4G has a smaller capacity battery then the 3Gs. I think it's 940mah compared to the 3Gs' 1300mah. And the iPod Touch 4G has only 256Mb of ram, just like the 3Gs. Having used both a 3Gs and an iPod Touch 4G, I'd say they are about the same when it comes to general performance.

But than again, you're forgetting features like 3G networking and GPS - I believe they deliver both about equal battery life in the end (and the 3GS longer when airplane mode is turned on).

Look at the iPod Touch 3G then. Its battery is the same size as the 4G's, but it gets slightly better battery life than the 4G. Even the 3Gs with 3G on and being used in similar ways to the iPod Touch 4G, still gets better battery life.

I hope it does, as mine is performing strong running iOS5, even jailbreaked to keep some customisations.

For 90% of the people not much is going to change regarding usage patterns, as they have a somewhat limited scope of tasks they want their smartphones to perform. This means mostly browsing, email, social networks, photos and videos. Don't forget that most of Androids growth falls into this category of "just sufficient" smartphones.

And the 3Gs is the king of those. For me it's the best iPhone to date - and think of it: it may be the only one supporting five iOS versions, beginning wirh iOS2. That's ... Almost unbelievable, isn't it?

Apple is still selling it, so do you guys think it'll get iOS 6?

It's already amazing that Apple supports their devices this long, basically you get an iOS version the phone releases with +2 major updates.

But since Apple for the first time has 3 phones on sale at the same time, could they extend the updates to +3 major updates?

I'd also imagine it'll be sending a big FU to Android with their update mess and partially to Microsoft too, when a 2009 phone receives the latest update and is still relevant.

3GS could definitely handle the update.

Why? So you old 3Gs users can complain even more that your phone now takes 10 seconds to open something up vs the 5 it now takes you on iOS5?

The 3Gs launched in June of 2009 with iOS 3.0. The iPhone 3G launched in July of 2008 with iOS 2.0. The 3Gs is not the 3G.

Other than obvious economic reason, why would you still own a 3gs beyond this year?

Based on iOS5 performance on the 3GS, I doubt it. Angry Birds Was near unplayable for me, and it's not even a demanding game. I think Apple needs to drop support for it or trim iOS down a bit.

You sure it's not just your phone. I can play games just fine on my ios5 3GS.

It wasn't just my phone. Maybe we have different standards of fine, but Angry birds became jumpy and laggy. Other games were a bit better, some ran just fine.

For battery purposes, id say no. iOS 6 will require more power....that is if it gets a big upgrade and not just some mediocre upgrade like iOS 5.

Well not only does angry birds space run fine on my 3gs, but I can also run more demanding games such as Crow with no lag.

What if someone just got a two year contract on AT&T with the free/$1 iPhone 3Gs? They'd be stuck with it for two years.

That would be the obvious reason of someone choosing based on economical reason.

Um... ok? That wasn't my experience. Telling me what your phone does isn't going to change what mine did.

3GS lasts longer than 4S.

And why are you so sure that iOS 6 will somehow require more power?

I'm very curious about iOS and 3GS support. I say it will have at least partial support oof the iOS6 features.

The iPhone 3GS will definitely not get iOS 6 regardless of whether it can handle the software, which I doubt it can.

Apple, from past history, offers consumers the next two versions of iOS after whatever was running on it when it was first released. The 2G was running iOS 1 and received 2 and 3, and the 3G which has identical hardware (cellular technology aside) to the 2G was running iOS 2, but received 3 and 4, and the 3GS was running iOS 3, and it received 4 and 5.

Apple will support the 3GS as long as they can without gimping the next iPhone.

And we should praising this fact. This is one of the great things that separates Apple from garbage android phones where you need a new device every quarter to keep current on the OS.

MyhicFrost is right. The 3GS most likely wont get the update.

My mom rocks the 3gs and I been trying to get her to upgrade it's getting to the point that I think AT&T might try to tell her she will lose her upgrade eligibility if she doesn't upgrade soon. I had that happen to me right before I made the switch to the 4 I was on the 3g not even the 3gs. AT&T sent me a letter saying that I would lose my upgrade eligibility if I didn't do it soon. I hade my phone for over three years. My mom keeps saying she wants to upgrade but then never does. And she keeps complaining about how slow her phone is even compared to my phone. I keep telling her to upgrade and she says she will but then never does. I think it's like if it is't broke why fix it. So anyway I think when iOS 6 comes out and if it isn't supported I hope that will motivate her to upgrade. I have a friend with the original iPhone and he can't run anything on his phone. Non of the apps run on it. And My mom has said she didn't want that to happen to her. Anyway sorry to rant

I must really be in the minority as I have a 3GS, my wife and 2 girls have 2 4's and and 1 4S and I don't see any huge difference in speed and even the display is not objectionable to me on the 3GS? I am running 5.1 and am curious as to what makes others so slow? Mark me down as a VERY satisfied 3GS owner.
