No. Most people do not follow Apples release schedule like us here. They simply walk in and say I want an iPad. Most wont know the difference between a 3 and 4th gen.

I disagree with this. Those avg people you speak of walk in and want the cheapest solution. Most are not interested in the Apple price tag. Most Apple buyers know exactly what they want and whats available. People who buy Apple are very much connected with whats going on in the tech world.

I'll stick with my iPad 3 for 2-3 more generations. It works great, no issues with games either as I play games that are basic and not too taxing on the GPU.

And i will have to disagree with this. 14 people (including myself) in my family/relatives own Apple products. 13 of them didn't know about a revised iPad coming out. Care to guess which one person knew?

Outside of Macrumors forum members, the majority of the population doesn't keep tabs on everything that Apple does.

I'll gladly wager you on this.

So because you and your family are oblivious to what is going on you think the rest of the world must be the same?

You and your family are the exception, not the norm.

I'll definitely wager you on that.

I do not know about that. Most people got live to live and do not spend all their time in this Forum. I would say a good half are oblivious and if they need a laptop they simply go and buy one.

Some of you people have been here so long, you forget that it is US that is not normal:rolleyes:

I just paid $800 for my iPad 3 64g AT&T. If I sell today I wouldn't get enough to get me a 4th gen with the same specs. So I think I will just hold on to my 3rd gen. :D

Yes apple definitely screwed iPad 3 owners with the updated 4th gen model
Just as the the evil meanies did with the 2nd gen release after the 1st iPad and the retina 3rd gen less than a year after that....oh wait no that's called a product update, it happens from time to time in the tech industry when there are tech enhancements such as the A6X that a company wants to get out into the consumer domain so that customers get bleeding edge tech as and when it's available.

But yes you're right, it's very clear they released new technology just to pi$$ off people who bought the old stuff, Apple is definitely the ONLY company that does this, despicable! (there is no emoticon for the expression on my face)

Staying on topic...no it wont, I work for a very big global company who are buying iPads for all the reps and believe me it makes no difference to them or anyone else that isn't a fanboi for that matter.
I swapped my gf's iPad 2 for my old iPad 3(without her knowing) and she actually never noticed the difference.

I've got the same one. Today it's worth $450-650, depending on where you sell it or trade it in. And just like macs, the top of line products take the biggest beating when it comes to resale value: people wanting to buy used want the biggest bang for the buck or the lowest price possible, and generally want the cheapest model for the cheapest price, period.

My use case is like yours, too. So I have no rational or reasonable basis for going from the 3 to the 4. Having to have the newest and greatest iDevice just for the purpose of having it is neither rational or reasonable. Call it upgrade fatigue or common sense and life in the real world starting to penetrate the RDF generated by the latest Apple Keynote.

But I'm already thinking about the future. My current mode of thinking is that my next pad will be a low or mid level WiFi instead of a top of the line cellular. I'm thinking a mifi would make more sense than a cellular connection on the pad: besides at least 60% of the places I regularly go have decent wifi connections, I'd rather pay $130 once instead of every time I upgrade a device, and I can use the mifi on those times when I have to tote a laptop into the real world. I'm using dropbox at work to regularly load and unload scanned images onto my iPad instead of lugging around paper files. It works so well that I'm starting to overcome my pre-cloud mindset that EVERYTHING has to be stored on my device at all times. This should somewhat diminish the loss of resale value.

I think sales will be slow(er) for the 4th gen because of the economy and the glut of iPads already on the market. IMO, just about everyone who wants an iPad has already bought one, or will buy a mini. The 4th will be limited to those with disposable income who just have to have the latest and greatest.

I agree with someones comments above that most do not follow the release schedule like we do. So they will buy it if they were ready for a tablet. Pure and simple.

But I for one will not be getting the 4 even though I was on track to get it. I bought the 3 for myself and was going to use it for the year and then pass that on to my wife and get myself the '4' when it came out next year. Now that apple has done this, I will wait till at least next years release if not the one after. That's assuming something better hasnt come along.

No sour grapes here about the quick release of the new version. Just tha facts.

The majority of Apple product owners follows tech to an extent, but they don't follow Apple trends as closely as you think. I'd say more than half of Apple product owners don't follow as much as we do but will somehow hear about the hype through others.

haven't bought the iphone5 nor will i buy the ipad4, i'll wait it out and buy the generation after each of these, by then i will be ready to upgrade all my peripherals too.

Will the 5th generation Ipad sales be slow in anticipation of the 6th generation? Let's discuss now!!!!

I was in Target last night and a guy walked in and asked for an iPad with 16gb of RAM. The clerk showed him an iPad 2 and an iPad 3 in that flavor. The guy asked about the iPad 3 and the clerk told him (honest clerk!) it was being discontinued in favor of the iPad 4 but he still had some in stock. The guy said "Well I want them for Christmas presents...I'll take two of the iPad 3 then."

He clearly is in the norm. People just want an iPad. Until the 4 is on the shelves, they are oblivious to the differences.

Same thing happened today when I was at Best Buy on my lunch break. I was checking to see if any mini accessories arrived. A guy wanted to trade in his iPad 2 and get credit towards an iPad 3 to purchase today. The Best Buy employee was honest and told the guy about an updated version coming on Friday. The guy looked surprised but didn't care for the updated iPad and just bought the iPad 3.

Most people that own Apple products aren't aware of the these updates. So to the poster that said otherwise, I think this just proves a point. It's become apparent that the ones that really follow Apple product updates and launches are Macrumors members and tech savvy/tech enthusiast people.

It is clear that the iPad was updated solely to include the new connector. it makes no sense that the most expensive iPad would ship with an outdated connector. They threw in the A6X because the chip was ready and it'll make it more competitive for the holidays.

I don't know if iPad 5 will come as early as March but that is clearly the one to wait for. They haven't updated the design since iPad 2 (except make it thicker) so iPad has to be a complete redesign. I'm expecting it to be much thinner, lighter, with smaller bezels on the side (similar to the mini).

That's what I think

This, I know tons of folks with apple products who only find out about the new stuff from friends or when they decide to step into an apple store and the employee tells them, other than that they are clueless.

Hey MikeAK did you know that Gucci sold flatware? If you're not into it like that how would you know, yet people who keep up with the latest news in dishware figure most people just know.

I myself won't be getting the new iPad as I don't want an upgrade yet, but the next one might be left too, depends on what sort of an upgrade it is, if its just internal geek specs over sexy features then I'll not bother.

Are you serious? Are people that oblivious to Gucci flatware? People that own ANY type of flatware are in the know. :D
