One good reason (for AT&T anyway)? Travel. Say I go to Europe and bring along my iPhone. If it's unlocked, I can just get a cheap prepaid SIM from a local carrier while over there and use that for my telephone needs. If the phone is locked, then I have to either pay exorbitant roaming fees, or exorbitant fees for international minutes.
I haven't called them about my iPhone. But they did unlock my Razr for me (many years ago). I called and told them I would be traveling internationally and they said ok.

They do it for other phones. It's BS the won't for the iPhone.

And thats why I'm getting an iPhone from Canada. No more waiting for a Jailbreak/Unlock. I just hope there's a workaround for the Facetime activation issues.

I'm curious as to how much Apple sells iPhone 4s in Canada for the 16GB and 32GB.

It'll always be locked into AT&T, now that they bought T-Mobile and have no big competition.
Better guess would be if the iPhone was released under Sprint, but it's unlikely, considering Google has chosen Sprint as its premier brand.

Thanks for the link.

Although an unlocked iPhone would be nice to buy, price and travelling to Canada makes it hard to justify getting one to bring back to the states.

Buying a new iPhone for $199-$299 plus paying $30 per month on contract for the data plan is still cheaper than buying one outright (not including cost of my phone service as I would keep that regardless of having an iPhone or not).
Also, I would probably want the next generation iPhone when it comes out so would be subject to buying another phone.

I hear you.
If you plan on sticking with AT&T mind as well take advantage of the subsidy price of $199.
I dont travel much outside the US and when I do I can use a cheap Nokia for a week or 2 so its not worth it to me either trying to get to Canada to buy one full price.

That's true. I'm from the USA, but I actually called an Apple Store in Japan this past February and asked one of the employees that question. He said all iPhones sold in all Apple Stores in Japan are locked to SoftBank.

After the grey market's access to itunes database for unlocking(including at&t);
do you think apple lets it? does it mean apple will sell (next)iPhones f.u. in usa apple retail stores?
