They should be able to easily. There's a 47.9% markup on the iPad and Apple has already stated they will drop the price after a few months to get additional buyers.

They said they would be open to it. Which is a far cry from doing it.

Actually, they didn't say anything. An analyst said Apple made it seem like they would be open to a price drop if sales were poor during a meeting of some sort that he attended.

I will be surprised if an educational discount is available. The same pricing information is shown on the Apple Store for Education that is shown everywhere else. A discounted price may show up in time for back-to-school shopping over the summer, but I don't expect to see it tomorrow when pre-ordering starts, or on April 3rd.

Apple has, in the past, thrown in free "extras" of one sort or another for purchasers of new products, in lieu of lowering the price. These have ranged from free engraving on an iPod to a free iWork suite on an iMac. Maybe educational customers will get some kind of offer like this. But I think we'll be shelling out the same amount of money as everyone else, for the first few months at least.

Maybe for school districts for bulk purchases, but since anyone can claim to be a student via Apple.com, no, Apple won't give educational pricing to the average consumer.

Ebates (and probably all other) Cashback - iPad Exception

Ebates normally gives 1.0% cashback on all Apple Store purchases, but there is a disclaimer in the fine print.

"Exclusions: Cash back is not available on iPad purchases, iPhone purchases completed over the phone or in store"

Just thought I'd share the knowledge with others.
