They’ve kind of hinted at what they were going to do with the naming convention this year. They skipped the 7s and went straight to 8. My guess is that in 2018, there will be a 9 (really 8s) with some incremental updates. There will also be the XI or 11 that will introduce the Plus version with updates and possibly another color added.

In 2019, full steam ahead with the XII or 12. There won’t be a new model of the 6/7/8/9 form factor. They will still be available in the iterations Apple sees worth continuing to offer for lower price entry, but that generation of design will be done for seeing updates.
Im thinking more along the lines of iPhone 10.2 - snow badger

I think they’ll have the following models:

X1/X1+
8s/8s+
SE2

That’s it. There’s too little difference in the 6 form factor phones now.

Nah, SE2 would make too much sense. The SE will join the iPad Mini and Mac Mini. It’ll be around and people will keep counting the days since the SE was released. Whenever directly asked, Apple will state that they’re committed to their products. When people have finally given up on it, switched to another product and forgotten about it, they’ll update it.

My 2018 prediction:..

Tier 1 ($1000+)
iPhone Xs/Xs Plus (or XI/XI Plus)

Tier 2 ($700+)
iPhone X

Tier 3 ($500+)
iPhone 8/8 Plus

Tier 4 (below $400)
iPhone SE2: based on 7 specs but looks like a mini 8 with glass back, wireless charging, and no Telephoto.

All iPhones next year will have glass rears for wireless charging. Apple should kill the 6-7 series by next year..

This year was an odd year to predict like the NBA's recent off-season. Apple released a tick and tock model. Skipped the #9 like Microsoft.

I assumed the 8 would be called 7s. And then the X would be pronounced Eks and not Ten. Many of us would just assume it's the 10th anniversary but still say it as Eks. The iPhone X has an identity crisis all right. Every Best Buy employee said Eks. YouTubers start saying Ten more.

Apple blew a golden opportunity with an Eks-branding. It's not like the iPhone X is the 10th gen iPhone ever. Just spell it X, say it as Eks, and we can all assume it's the 10th anniversary. Poor #9. Just made it confusing.

That's why it is hard to predict. But I will go with what I posted above. Kill off the 6 through 7 line. 5s should be discontinued already since no updates after this year. Then have four pricing tiers. The SE/budget iPhone line gets refreshed every two years.

Its too early to tell - Apple doesn't detail what they'll be doing in the future and so any talk about future plans is fruitless.

How can you say that, as a staff member, discussing and fighting about future Apple stuf is what we live for, and makes for great/fun/stupid/absurd/ content 😵

My 2018 prediction:..
Tier 3 ($500+)
iPhone 8/8 Plus

I just don’t see them selling the 8/8+ starting at what amounts to $50 more than what they’re currently selling the 6s for. That’s waaaaay too good an offer. The 8+ would be an amazing phone at $600 even after a year.
