Has it got that bad? I think iTunes Match and Apple Music might have made me lazy. I've been using iTunes/Music since the 2nd Gen iPod nano, and a large portion of my music library is from my CDs that I've ripped in iTunes over the years. I listen to what I want whenever I want, because it's all accessible from my phone at my leisure. I have not investigated what my options are should I let Apple Music lapse, as that's something I've not considered. Unless Apple stuffs it up massively, Apple Music will be the last subscription that I get rid of.
I’m in much the same boat, my first iPod brought me in to using iTunes and not too long after I’d ripped all my CDs and given them to charity (I still regret that!).
Match is a great service and it’s what keeps me in Apple Music, not least because I have a lot of stuff that isn’t available on streaming.
My issue really is that I’m now stuck with Music - there are no other options for me on iPhone. So I have no choice but to overlook lots of little UI niggles, many of which might not bother the average user.
For example; the standard Album playlist is completely useless as it presents every release as an album. Download a playlist of 10 tunes on 10 different albums and those 10 albums will appear in the Album playlist, even though you only have 1 song from each. Singles appear on the Album playlist. It’s rubbish, it’s been this way forever, and they never try to fix it.
As a result because I like listening to albums I need to come up with workarounds to try and keep my albums accessible and not lost down the songs list somewhere.
I could list loads more of these! Artists and Genres are just as bad in their own ways. But I have no other app options, so I put up with it even though it doesn’t improve.
So that’s bad enough, but the real issue is that Apple could completely change how the music app works in a way I like even less and if I don’t like it it’s just tough ****.
Who knows maybe they’ll implement AI really well and it’ll solve all my issues. I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but the way tech has been headed the past 5/10 years I’m not gonna be holding my breath!
