iPad is my choice.

Compact, smooth, unmistakeable cupertino.

And I seriously doubt that anyone who snickers at sanitary requisites is grown up enough to hold down the kind of job needed to pay for one.

(With the exception of Mos from the IT crowd who faints at the sound of the word 'bra')

I think this is Apple's way of throwing everyone off.

iPad? I am betting no.

iSlate? Maybe

i-something = maybe

Apple Tablet would be cool or just tablet. I am sick of iNames. Let's move on. Apple has the street cred now where iNames aren't required.

Apple will no doubt be thinking ahead, whatever it calls its game changing device will eventually become the generic term

Any MP3 player is an 'iPod'...

Dear Sir/Madam,

You clearly have never worked in IT.

Moss is not an exception.

:D

How very dare you! I know LOTS of people in IT and they are...

...some of them....

...surely one I met...

...I am sure I once heard of....

Ok, fair point. :D

whats in a name?

everything!!! in gizmodos article on the story behind the newton the author mentions Sakoman first decided on a name. Name first then the product...just like naming a child. One would at least narrow it down to a couple before the child is born. I am sure that Apple has long known the products name and even if it is something dumb like iPad at least it is not XL3000!

What someone needs to do is please explain why Newton is not a viable name? It is far superior to islate, ipad or iguide (i believe these are smoke screens). To be honest those names are dumb. Older techies still have a vision of the first Newton but us in our 20s and 30s do not. We have no connection to the name or the product. Therefore it would make sense for Newton to resurrect the name for a product that would perform different functionality. I have taken a short amount of time and reviewed the history of the Newton and I have found that although it had some flaws it was still well ahead of its time. The new apple tablet will also be ahead of its time with a sleek form factor and multi-touch. In addition to multiple apps from the app store the apple tablet could have endless potential. This would qualify the tablet to have a better name...the NEW Newton.

Indeed. Bringing the Newton brand back would rock.

Not only that, but it would say "FU Ballmer, you didn't invent slate computing, we did. And now we're reinventing it."

iDesk

From "New Oxford American Dictionary":

Desk |desk|
noun
a piece of furniture with a flat or sloped surface and typically with drawers, at which one can read, write, or do other work

The "Apple New Newton" would be great, but why not the "Apple New Edsel", or "Apple New New Coke"?

In case you miss the point, the Steve is not going to cripple his hot little new product by recycling the monker of one of the most infamous product failures in history. It would be difficult for Apple's marketing messages to penetrate the currents of derisive laughter.

Eh? You're talking about the successful Newton MessagePad, right? At what point was it a failure?

After they sold it off to Palm...
I kid, I Kid.

If not reviving the newton name then how about Isaac?
Although the kids might ask what's a Saac?

ipad is a very apple like name.

and too much like ipod. talk to anyone with an accent, especially if their english isn't stellar and it will be a nightmare.

also, we are talking about Apple. they could call it the iLiver and folks will flock to buy it

as for some of the ideas.

the whole Mac v ipod will depend on the OS. cause if it is called the Mac something folks will assume it runs the same Mac OS as the lap/desktops. not the iphone OS. and if it is running the Mac OS, calling it the ipod anything is the same confusion. don't see that happening.

i suspect that ipod would be in the name if it is running that OS. so ipod X. a part of me wonders about ipod slate or ipod tablet but given the art on the invite I wonder if ipod canvas (or something similar) could be a contender

Did you read the history story?

That project ran "forever" before had a product. ( although I guess this one has gestated for a long while too. ). '87-88 to '93 release is about the same amount of time from release till dead.

It was largely created while Jobs was not there and killed once he was fully back. Palm conquered the PDA category. If it was a successful cash cow why did Apple stop selling them?

The Newton was about as sucessful as the Cube. The mini has done way better in the case of the latter (with a new name). Newton was not a flop, but it did not have long term staying power in the market.

P.S. it is more of a Tucker ( a car ahead of its time) than it is an Edsel though.
One reason to spin Newton back into Apple would be to perhaps do it better later.
I don't think it is negative just per se, perhaps more so non-Jobs era .
I'm not sure Apple has done a "OK we went back and did it right this time" product yet
without a name change.

My first impression of "iPad" is that it sounds too much like iPod, and that could mean trouble for sales. Yeah, I want to buy an iPod. No, no, that new thing in the commercials. iPad? Yeah, iPud... pad... but I thought an iPud cost a lot less!
