I understand your point, hence the suggestion, many others are likely are unaware. It's a work around suggested by the OP without having to look at your iPhone or Watch. Very convenient with driving or what have you.
I used mine the other day at the gym and left phone behind. Put a playlist of songs on the watch and paired the AirPods. All was good until about 20 minutes in, then they disconnected. I tired several things to get them to reconnect and no dice! Finally I rebooted the watch and they connected again. After that one issue they were fine for the rest of my run which lasted another 50 minutes or so..
