It actually bothers me a hell of a lot! We need an update NOW.

ANP

I'm with you bro ........this is ridiculous. It might have something to do with the "time coalescing" there was a link up here in another discussion about this issue, and one poster whom seemed to know what he was talking about dropped a link to the Apple site with an article explaining this process.

In the article it said it would happen so quickly you wouldn't notice it, but obviously we are. You can Google the term along with Mavericks. I'm sure it would be one of the top five hits on Google.

It's annoyed me so much, I rolled back to ML again.

I hope this gets ironed out like yesterday! This is what I don't understand about Apple, I'm sure some of the Devs must have noticed this. I love Macs, don't get me wrong. When this issue is resolved I'm defo going back to Mavs.

You night also think an update just for this issue might be forth coming. I hope 10.9.1 is not far off.

I believe i have managed to fix iTunes beach balling / randomly crashing. iTunes would beach ball playing music / Tv Shows / Movies.

Disclaimer: This worked for me, if you want to try it make sure you have a backup of your System using Time Machine.

  1. Downloaded App Zapper (Trial version)
  2. Open App Zapper in your Downloads Folder
  3. Go into the App Zapper Preference un tick the zap sound effect and Keep Apple Applications Safe
  4. Drag iTunes into " Drop Apps Here "
  5. Click Zap it will completely remove iTunes from the system
  6. Download iTunes from Apple.com
  7. Install
  8. Test

Hey guys. I thought I was the only one going psycho, feeling like I'm slowly losing my 2012 MB Air to the random millisecond beachballs. I did an upgrade from ML, don't have any 3rd party apps installed and mostly have music stored in my MB. I've never had a problem installing OS X or iOS on any of my devices. This is the first I've encountered. I see the random beachballs moving the cursor around in iTunes and in Safari only. Hopefully, we can find or be given a fix soon.

beachballs on my mid-2011 Air too =)
with wiped disk and clean installed Mavericks

I've updated from ML and also getting beachballs now and then on my macbook air mid 2012. I also noticed some very short lags sometimes. Hopefully they will fix that with 10.9.1 :(

I have an 2012 MBA as well and have so far not noticed any beachballs at all. Did not do a clean install, just a normal upgrade to MV and it seems to just work.

What I'd like to see in 10.9.1

What I'd like to see in 10.9.1

Fixes:

-Fixed an issue where a beachball would appear in place of the cursor in some instances of browsing in the Finder or in Safari.
-Fixed an issue where .mp3 files would stop playing in the Finder when opening a new tab.
-Fixed an issue where scrollbar behavior in System Preferences would automatically reset itself to default after closing the System Preferences window, thus making the scrollbars prominent everywhere.
-Fixed an issue where it would take forever for System Preferences to initially launch after selecting it from the Apple menu.
-Fixed an issue where there was a huge lag trying to Quick Look .CR2 images in the Finder when reading them from an SD card or directly from the internal HD, or an external HD.

Enhancements

-Finally made it possible for the user to switch the side of the screen where notifications show up. (for the visually handicapped or just personal preference.)
-Changed behavior of QuickTime X and iTunes so the apps don't have to shift into their own space just to take a video into fullscreen.
-Put dictionary results back at the top of Spotlight where they belong and reinstated the option to configure it in System Preferences.
-Made it possible for the user to put icons wherever they want inside a folder in Launchpad, instead of the so-called organized uniformity of icon placement that was present in previous versions of OS X
-Made it possible to put more than just app icons in Launchpad; files, folders, etc.
-Introduced nested folders in Launchpad
-Allow as many icons in a folder in Launchpad as the user wants and allow them to scroll through that folder
-Finally introduced an "add bookmark folder" button in Safari right next to the folder drop-down menu after pressing command+D to add a new bookmark...just like every...other...browser.
-Once again allow the user to take screenshots EVEN THOUGH there's a copyrighted DVD currently being played in the system. And give more than a transparent window .png as a result of that screenshot.

Yeah, that's the shortlist.

Seeing beachballs on my MBA mid-2013; clean install. It may not be as often as some others in this thread and I don't really notice a slow down, but still annoying nonetheless.

I do have chrome installed, but I only use it for websites that require flash (I use safari for everything else)

So far I've had less beachballs than I did on ML. I get one or two random split-second beach ball blips a day in Safari and that's about it...

Feb 2011 iMac. Have had to kill Finder several times (after waiting a loooong time) to get rid of beachball. I've noticed that it seems to happen more often if I move files off the desktop into a folder (also on desktop). When Finder restarts the desktop is empty. My files etc are there if I open Finder and go to the Desktio folder but not on the actual desktop. Have to reboot to fix that.

It's a real pain.

So my 2012 Air is not the only one suffering, for some reason I thought my Air was running smooth on Mav after updating iPhoto, Numbers etc seems a bit slower now eh...

Hello everybody,

I uninstalled Chrome and flash player 2 hours ago with AppCleaner because I saw that google helper gave a lot of errors in the console. I am not encountering anymore the problem. Let me know if happens the same for you.
I will keep you update in case the problem happens again.

ps: i am sorry for my bad english.

Ah, so sorry ....."I'm with you sister."

Sincere Apologies,

P.S A New Yorker ......ah, the greatest city in the world. I miss the Carneige Deli so much, among other places, but I'm hungry for a Pastrami on Rye :)

Hehe no worries... yes, NYC. Nothing like it.

----------

So... I have yet to install Flash since upgrading to 10.9, and yet I have the beach balls. Just don't get it...

I'm getting the split second beachballs too. It's driving me nuts. I'm using a late 2012 mac mini which I purchased 2 months ago, I also did a fresh install of Mavericks. I am using chrome but this happens with safari too so I don't think Chrome is causing it.

I notice it on both my 6mo old Mini, and my 13in Retina. Neither had the issue under 10.8.

Finally stopped

Hey guys. I just posted Oct. 26 about the spinning beachballs I was seeing since Oct. 22 (day I installed Mavericks). Well good news, it finally stopped yesterday Oct. 29. I'm so used to my Apple products working perfectly that it wasn't until late last night that I realized that the beachballs hadn't shown up all day and I haven't seen any at all today either. Hopefully things clear up for you all as well. Now I'd just like to know what may have caused that odd temporary behavior.

I had no spinning beachballs prior to updating to Mavericks on release date. Rarely saw it. Now I get them frequently per day. Mine are split seconds also, but it's so annoying. I'll try uninstalling Chrome and Flash Player as suggested.
