A dodgy jailbreak by the sounds of it. Try and be more careful what you do with your phone... :p

But, no sweat, the Geniuses will assist if it's within their power to do so. However, there is absolutely no chance they will replace your iPhone if there's something wrong with it and it's jailbroken. :(
I asked a tech outright last time I was at an Apple Store "What is Apple's policy on warranty claims and jailbreaking", and he told me that for any claim where the jb could be causing the problem (poor battery life, slowness, flash not working, etc), they'll just do a restore. If it's still a problem, they'll replace/fix it. However, they will flag the phone in their database as being jb'd....but they wont take any action solely for that reason.

I brought in my jb iPhone 4 a few months ago cause I dropped it and the back cracked and they gave me a new back cover and installed it for free.

Why would you say that like you know for sure? You have no idea what the policy might be and any answer you give outside your own experience is just conjecture at best. Jailbreaking is legal and we are talking about hardware faults here.

I have had 2 jailbroken phones replaced on the spot in the Apple Store. 3G and 3GS - both for the hairline cracks in the case. Infer your own conclusions from this statement of fact.

new computer... saved me tons of time

just tried the restore on a windows vm rather than on my mac.. and the restore process worked flawlessly. thank you!!!

as already pointed out, this couldn't be further from the truth. had my jailbroken 4 replaced last summer. they said it was water damage, but gave me a replacement for free. the rep even asked my all sorts of questions about why i like jb'ing. he DNGAF.

I think it's more up to the Genius myself. I took a JBing phone in before I knew better I was refused help onthe spot the genius told me restore it to stock and bring it back. I did and they exchanged it the 2nd time I came back. Some Genius don't like Jailbreaking some JB themselves and some just don't care one way or the other. just like the rest of the world.. However you don't know which Genus you will get that's why the main advice is still restore to stock when goingto Apple.

Honestly it depends on who you get at the Genius bar. Some don't care and do not attempt to look for Cydia. Others will and if they find it they may say that you voided your warranty by jail breaking your device.

If you have any issue that you feel warrants a replacement, you should always restore your iPhone. Why would you want to hand a complete stranger a device that has all of your data?

Absolutely, it had been discussed before, Apple policy is to NOT replace any unit that is "out of warranty" (Jailbroken units are consider out of warranty), however if you ask nicely and you get a nice Genius, they will replace/service it.

Glad OP got this sorted out, but what if one were to want to use the same computer again at a later date (i.e. - OP uses another computer to restore, but later wants/needs to restore again using the computer that he got the errors on)?

Not having that issue, just wondering what the steps would be in that scenario. Does the restore fix all those issues? Do the host files still need to be edited?

Thanks in advance to those willing to satisfy my curiosity!
