Well...I pulled the trigger and ordered the maxed out MacBook Air m1. I’m beyond excited though I won’t be getting it unti the middle of February. It’s okay though because now I can stop watching YouTube video comparisons and reading tons of articles.

Thank you all for your input I really appreciate.

Happy New Year to all!!!

What is the CPU load for showing a YouTube video full-screen on Safari?

I use my MacBook Pro as a blanket heater at night because the house is around 60 degrees.

Seems like it wouldn’t imo. It still stays at 95 or below if not much better than before, cools down much faster, stays cooler more consistently more of the time, and it doesn’t collect dust and build up from fans over time either. Almost seems like it’d be even better than something that uses a fan and pushes the system slightly harder?

The MBA also has a replaceable battery, so you could DIY it. The MBP doesn't and Apple just replaces the whole keyboard deck.
As far as I can tell, they are both equally replaceable..and equally difficult. You need to dissolve the glue or pull the strips in both cases.

Between 5 and 10%, mostly 6% of CPU usage. My M1 is at 33 degrees watching a low res Odisea channel Documentary on YouTube.

Congrats on your new purchase. The only downside of getting a M1 is that you get a vitamin D deficiency and your skin turns a pastey white color due to the lack of sunlight.

Coldest laptop I’ve owned.

If you set on a smoker pit while your cooking Brisket, or leave in the front seat of a car in August in Texas you’re gonna have problems.

You will not wear it out by using it. But keep in mind, all electronics are consumables.

It’s not like the air will go full speed on 1000c. It’ll throttle to the temp that’s safe for it to be used long term. Hell I still has a core 2 duo imac that works until today. Don’t worry about it.

You’re going to love it. I’ve really enjoyed mine so far.

Congratulations, your going to hopefully love it, it’s like getting your first Mac again.
I agree--and I also think the last 2 or 3 releases of macOS would have been so much more fun to use on M1. They were definitely made with this silicon in mind.

I’m running a 2008 MBP that settles in around 80 degrees. I let it run there for extended periods of time. I believe the M1 Air typically runs lower temps. I think you’re ok.

Thank you all for your encouraging words. I can’t wait to get it but hey, it’ll give developers more time to update their apps for Apple Silicon. I’ll do a review of it once I use it for a couple weeks to let you guys know how it goes.

It has been that way for me.

If they are like previous versions of MBA and MBP, replacing battery in MBA is heaps easier.

Equally easy to have Apple perform an Air vs Pro battery replacement via Apple's Out-of-Warranty Battery Service program. :D

Yep, Pro costs more. Yep, you can save $30 or so off the Air cost by going DIY route - and if you trust the ebay sellers really have OEM batteries. (at ~50Ah, I wouldn't risk non-OEM)

... and all this is if you ever actually do replace a battery. I've never felt the need to do so with any of my Macs, though I usually don't keep them past 4-5 years before upgrading.

I think we can all agree that heat is the enemy of electronics of most any kind. That being said I’m very close to ordering a maxed out MacBook Air m1 but my fear is that since it doesnt have active cooling it may not last as long as the MacBook Pro m1.
There's never been in history a known issue of MacBooks experiencing a meltdown of any type due to heat.
I just realized the time usage is different too, 20 hours on the pro and 18 hours on the air. But I wonder how big of difference it is in real day to day use. 2 hours is a bit of a difference. Oy vay 😂
Come on man, is a difference of two hours really going to matter to you, especially when the shortest of the two options is 18 hours? That's almost double of what Apple promised in the last Intel MacBook Air. Relax and enjoy. 😊

I'm sure you will love it as many others have. Congrats.

If heat hasn't killed my 2011 MBP yet, I expect the M1 machines to be juuuuuust fine.

Also, if I recall correctly from some reading the M1 temperatures are measured from deep inside the chip, and Intel chips are measured somewhere on the exterior. Don't quote me on that though, and please correct me if I'm wrong.

The fans are now the only rotating component, so they have a higher likelihood of being the first parts of the system to fail.
The M1 fan should last even longer than an Intel-book fan because it won't spend all its time roaring like jet engine. Besides, replacing MBP fans has always been fairly easy if you follow iFixit's instructions.

Also, without a fan, there’s no air inflow. And that means dust and other particles do not get into the machine.
Sure, but removing the bottom plate once a year to blow dust out is a pretty simple thing to do.
