I love my smart cover but I am worried down the line that it will become useless due to the magnets wearing out...is that possible or am just making it up?

You forgot to subtract the 30~45 days from manufacturing > transportation > stockroom.

Yes they will but I doubt that will be an issue in the anticipated lifetime of the device. We have magnets in the lab that are more than 6 years old and are still pretty much as strong as the day that we bought them.
That's what I'm not sure about. Maybe this is a dumb question but I seem to remember having magnets that wore out a little.
Mate, you'll only be keeping the iPad 2 for a year. Then you'll get iPad 3. So when the magnets run out of magic magnet dust isn't really a problem.

Neodymium magnets (most likey what's used) lose <1% per decade. Much, much less (negligible) if they are "kept" with an opposing magnet - which will happen when the cover is attached.
