I love my smart cover but I am worried down the line that it will become useless due to the magnets wearing out...is that possible or am just making it up?

Yes they will but I doubt that will be an issue in the anticipated lifetime of the device. We have magnets in the lab that are more than 6 years old and are still pretty much as strong as the day that we bought them.

It all depends on where you live. The closer you live to the North Pole, the longer the last.

Mate, you'll only be keeping the iPad 2 for a year. Then you'll get iPad 3. So when the magnets run out of magic magnet dust isn't really a problem.

You will realize long before the magnets wear out that the smart cover is a gimmicky overpriced unprotective ripoff that Apple has somehow convinced a lot of sheep is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Neodymium magnets (most likey what's used) lose <1% per decade. Much, much less (negligible) if they are "kept" with an opposing magnet - which will happen when the cover is attached.

We might actually have flying cars by the time they weaken appreciably. :)

Where have I heard this type of thing before? Must have been on an Android forum I was visiting.

Not everyone upgrades a $500 device that they don't need every year. :)

Dude, you need to get laid.

Haha. I was thinking the same thing.

By the way-I'm so sick of the "sheep" comments. It's such a lame attempt at insulting a group of people who buy what they want too. Also, anyone who uses that term really has no business loitering around on MacRumors. It's contradictory.
