18th year… since SE 2024 will get it as well

It will of course get an M4 and TB5 with 80 Gbit/s, maybe even two ports. And also keep the Home Button with Touch ID and of course there will be a Plus version.

Those would be good reasons to upgrade from my 8 Plus and SE 2022. 🥰 I only need one device then.

Glass back is also coming back and the headphone jack returns. The bezels will be smaller too like when the first 9.7" iPad Pro changed to 10.5" in the second version. Also no notch or island will be inside the screen.

Yes I know, I am crazy... 🙃 Just let me dream...

The latest non-Pro iPhone 16 has USB 2, which was released 24 years ago, in the year 2000. But the iPhone 16 Pro having USB 3 is nothing to celebrate, since USB 3 was released 16 years ago, in 2008.

At the very least, for the exorbitant price that Tim Cook charges, iPhones should at least have USB 4, which was released five years ago, in 2019.

I guess consumers just don’t care.

It's interesting how handicapped iPhones are.

What's the cost difference between a USB2 and USB3 chip? I would guess less than a dollar each at this point bought in massive quantities.

I know "Pro" phones are debatable, but if Apple is hyping "Shot on iPhone" and actual pros using them as cameras, at least some should have USB4 for transferring huge video files.

Doesn’t handicap me, all my photos transfer wirelessly. I guess that’s why consumers don’t find them handicapped; I’m not aware of anyone that plugs in an iPhone other than to charge it.

I'm the exception. Every iOS update since like 12 I have to update my parents phone over iTunes because they are always out of storage and aren't savvy enough to transfer their stuff safely to a computer. The backup is extremely slow.

Also when I had to get my 1TB 13PM repaired/replaced at the Apple store I wanted a iTunes backup as its faster to restore than iCloud and wanted a physical copy of my data. It was painfully slow.

It’s not any better on Android. Practically only Samsung Galaxy S flagship and Google Pixel use USB3. The rest, even the newest Xiaomi flagship the Xiaomi 12 is USB2. All mid range and lower are 100% USB2.

To give Apple credit, at least there’s Airdrop that works well with Macs.

If USB3 connectivity is a must for you, better do a switch as I don’t expect Apple to do anything different anytime soon. I’m guessing Apple will forego the charging/data port altogether. With things like airdrop, ultrawideband, wifi6, MagSafe, etc, seems like Apple is building up a wireless alternative.

Either you’ll wait forever, or you can just switch now to Galaxy S or Google Pixel and enjoy USB3 transfer speed. THe only next thing Apple would do is going portless. Apple cares more about the money they make through MfI than a single consumer.
How wrong you were....

Although the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have USB 3, which is already outdated since it was released 16 years ago (in 2008), they only come with a USB 2 cable in the box. Yes, this is how much of a cheapskate Tim Cook is. Those phones range in price from $999 to $1,599. USB 2 was relased in the year 2000. For $1,599, Cook will give you 24 year old technology.

But that type of USB 3 is the 10Gbps one which was released in July 2013 rather ( it should have been called USB 3.1 as it should have been compared to the confusing state it is today). I wouldn’t say USB 3.1 speeds are dated on an iPhone like the 16 or the 15 Pro. But one day it will get Thunderbolt 5 speeds bi directional 80/120Gbps

I agree with you on the USB 2.0 preference especially for the USB C iPhones as lightning from beginning to end on iPhones always used 2.0 speeds. If the SE 2024 gets priced at a acceptable price until $500 for the massive upgrade I’d say USB 2.0 is still acceptable for it considering the iPhone SE Lineup on average don’t get upgraded every year compared to the 16/16 Pro and the focus on Particularly the SE 2024 to the customer is the fact that it has 2.0. People except that from the SE lineup but the 16 being far more premium and it’s USB C at least not supporting 5Gbps is the most criminal thing. Thats what Apple fans want from the non pro iPhones besides the SE ( until it’s time)

USB 3.1 is dated. As you correctly pointed out in your post, USB 3.1 (10 Gbps) was released in 2013. That was 11 years ago. So Tim Crook is selling us 11 year old technology for up to $1,599. Also, that same 10Gbps speed was first released on a Mac in 2011 using Thunderbolt 1. So that same 10Gbps speed has been available on Macs for 13 years already.

The first Macs with Thunderbolt 2 (20Gbps) were relased in 2013. So Tim Cook, in 2024, gives us a wired data transfer speed that is only half as fast as that on an 11 year old Mac. Cook is either clueless or shameless. Or both.

The first Macs with Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) were relased in 2016, which was eight years ago, and which has four times the wired data transfer speed of this year's iPhone 16 Pro.

The first Macs with USB 4 (40Gbps) were released in 2020. With that, Tim Crook had a choice between giving the iPhone Thunderbolt 3 or USB 4 since they are the same 40Gbps speeds, but instead he chose to give the iPhone 16 Pro 13 year old speeds equivalent to Thunderbolt 1, and the iPhone 16 (non-Pro) 24 year old speeds of USB 2.

I agree with you on the USB 2.0 preference especially for the USB C iPhones as lightning from beginning to end on iPhones always used 2.0 speeds.
The first Macs with USB-C were released in 2015, which was nine years ago. Despite that, Tim Crook didn't release an iPhone with USB-C until eight years later, in 2023. He was too busy enjoying all that money he was making by licensing Lightning (which is only USB 2.0) through the MFi Program.

Today, the M4 Pro Mac mini was announced, and it has Thunderbolt 5, which supports data transfer speeds of up ot 120 Gb/s. That is 240 times faster than the USB 2.0 speeds on the latest iPhone 16 (non-Pro). So if you buy the new M4 Pro Mac mini and the new iPhone 16, a data transfer between those two devices that would've only taken 1 minute if the iPhone 16 had Thunderbolt 5, will instead take 4 hours. Would you rather wait 1 minute or 4 hours?

Tim Cook is unbelievably greedy.

I’d rather wait 1 minute, but ultimately it doesn’t actually matter since I never plug my phone in to transfer data. It all happens over the air. I suspect it’s the same for most people which is why you are finding it difficult to get people to care or impact sales numbers.

The iPhone 16e was announced today, February 19, 2025. It has the same USB 2.0 that was on the iPhone 1, which was released 18 years ago in 2007. The very first Apple products with USB 2.0 were released 22 years ago, in 2003. So if you have a 22 year old Mac or iPod, the newest iPhone will transfer wired data at the same extremely slow speeds. Thanks, Tim Cook!

And still no one cares.

I do. Sucks buying new tech only to learn corners were cut on modern standards.

I'm curious how this affects CarPlay as it evolves overtime.
That’s how cheaper devices work. They cut corners.

It won’t impact car play. If there was ever a version of CarPlay that needed more than USB 2.0 then it wouldn’t be offered on phones with USB 2.0.

It's okay we don't have to agree.

I'll be sure to lower my expectations and take another sip of apple juice to better defend why legacy protocols should exist in 2025 hardware next release.

Forgive me Tim.

It exists because it’s cheaper. Theres no need to drink apple juice or ask for forgiveness.

Thats true, you cant expect full new tech on the entry level iphone BUT 599 beer tokens aint cheap.
479 wasn't cheap either but at least my wife was more sympathetic..

This is the cheapest iPhone. It’s not cheap, but it’s Apple’s budget iPhone and therefore cuts features that the more expensive models have.

Majority of the consumers don’t care. Enthusiasts shrug. Wanna place bets the iPhone 17 Air is going to stick to USB 2.0?

People whose valuable work is on their iPhone, as well as people using the camera for RAW photo files and 4K video files, often sync and/or backup their iPhones to their Macs or PCs, and thus wired data transfer speeds are very important.

If Steve Jobs were still CEO, we would've already had Thunderbolt 3 on iPhones a long time ago. The first Macs with Thunderbolt 3 were released almost nine years ago, in 2016. Thunderbolt 3 is 80 times faster than USB 2.0. So if a syncing and/or backup takes 1 hour and 20 minutes with USB 2.0, it would take 1 minute with Thunderbolt 3. Think about that: 1 hour and 20 minutes versus 1 minute. That is a gigantic difference. But Tim Cook is either too mediocre to understand that, or does understand that and is too greedy to care.

Then they’ll buy a phone with USB 3 if that’s important to them, surely?

USB 3 is not Thunderbolt 3. USB 3 is much slower than Thunderbolt 3. USB 3 is already far outdated, and has been far outdated for nearly a deacade.
