So if I have an iPhone 4 now in Chicago and I get an average download speed of only 2.0 mbps on a theoretical max of 7.2 mbps, would an iPhone 4S make my 2.2 mbps actual speed faster just because it has a theoretical max of 14.4 mbps? Or is there a bottleneck that still would limit me to 2.0 mbps?

Tony

Do you have coverage for their new 4G/HSPA+ (not 4G/LTE) network in Chicago? If so, you would be connecting onto a different network and should see a speed bump.

If not... no.

4S is upgraded to using HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+. 14.4MBPS.

I get 3-5mbps on my 4 in my area. That's plenty, broadband speed, on my handset. Thus one of the many reasons I'm not upgrading to 4S. But that's a personal decision.

Does the 4S have HSPA+? don't see it here

You are wrong.

It uses the MDM6600 chipset, feel free to look up it's spec sheet.

If that is the case why don't they advertise as HSPA+?? maybe since they don't want to piss off VZ and S?

Yes we do, so I guess that's good news. :) But I thought the 4S WASN'T HSPA+.

On my iPhone 4 I'm getting 80ms Ping, 22.46 Mbps Download and 3.21 Mbps Upload.

Oh wait, that's from Wifi ;)

On 3G in my area I'm getting 265ms Ping, 1.43 Mbps Download and 0.85 Mbps Upload.

If I bought the Verizon iPhone 4S, would I see a benefit in 3G speeds?

Just rewatched the keynote, re-read a few articles, and checked again on Apple's website and they all specifically state it is HSDPA. No mention of HSPA+ at all. Makes sense too because if it was HSPA+ capable, it would support speeds up to 21mbps instead of 14mbps.
HSPA+ starts at 14Mbps ;)
HSDPA Release 5 is HSPA. (tops out at 14Mbps)
HSDPA Release 7 is HSPA+ (starts at 14Mbps)

If Apple used the MDM6600 radio, it will support HSPA+ (HSDPA Release 7)
I wouldn't be surprised to see if Apple chose to cripple it with HSDPA Release 5.

Accoring to this article, it looks as if the 4S DOES support HSPA+

There's a difference between "supports" and implemented.

*If* the 4S has the MDM6600 radio, then yes it supports HSPA+.
The question is did Apple implement Release 5 HSDPA or Release 7.

My Atrix "supports" HSPA+, but didn't ship with it enabled.
It shipped with Release 5 HSDPA.
It took a firmware update to the radio from Motorola to enable this feature.

We'll have to wait and see what Apple ships the 4S with.
