In my experience, 2-3 gb of OTA update file was downloaded and it required me 5.4 GB of free space to extract and install.

Could be, my point... anyone who have iTunes on a PC/Mac can avoid that hassle because it only needs that space on the phone for extracting when updating over the air. I can imagine being pain for anyone with 16GB of storage, something I did quit buying over a year ago.

I have never come across any OTA update bigger then 1.5gb but then it may very from one model to another.

They are forcing us to upgrade as there is no option under settings to prevent update file from being downloaded to your iDevice. Also 2 days later, they stop signing old ipsw files forcing you to move to latest restore file.

Stop spreading wrong information.

Apple forces us to update or compromise sacrificing 2-3 gb of downloaded update space on device. If you delete that file, it gets re-downloaded.

So it's clear that this is part of Apple's planned obsolescence strategy.

Having it automatically downloaded is not it being forcefully installed on your device. I'm not gonna dispute the fact that it takes up space on your device. But, my point is that they're not forcefully installing it onto your phone. As far as I know at least. You need to manually tap the install button. Correct me if I'm wrong though. I have no issue being wrong.

My wife had an update for iOS 7 for a few months before she updated her phone. You have to start the update as they don't automatically do it for you. It's best to update in most cases aside from 8.0.1 failure because of bug and security fixes. A 5s model would be able to get iOS 8, and 9 and possibly 10. All these companies have it setup so that you upgrade your phone every 2-3 years. If they didn't then they wouldn't be in business for a long time as a lot wouldn't see the need to upgrade.
