Freedom of choice is wonderful. Just buy the one you want and can afford. I don't see a problem. Just like buying a car but much cheaper. Plenty of people will probably buy both! :)

Of course it is. Not that the term "fair" even applies here. We're talking about consumer electronics, not moral and ethics here, after all...

If the 4.7" doesn't get updated and merely adopts last year's chipset and most of the internals from the 5S, then I wouldn't be happy.

But I know that won't happen.

If the 4.7" gets a better camera, A8 processor, better battery life, better display, perhaps more RAM, I couldn't care less what the 5.5" has.

It has nothing to do with "fair". Life isn't fair. Apple is a corporation in the business of making money. Not catering to your every whim and certainly not making sure they are "fair" to everyone.

God I hate this mentality.....

Doesn't matter to me, if there is an 5.5" and it's not delayed too long I'm buying it.

It would be like Android in that respect.

The only "smaller" phone to have the same specs as the larger model is the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, which is fantastic actually.

Sony deserve respect for that, as every other OEM doesn't do it. Even Samsung with their 18 trillion phones.

Will it be fair if the 5.5 inch iPhone has more features than the 4.7 ?

It doesn't matter. You'd hope the battery would be larger in the 5.5, as the larger screen would necessitate it. As for processing power, etc., it doesn't matter. iOS will run fine on it. Additionally, for people upgrading from the painfully slow 4's and 4s's, it'll seem blazing fast.

I'll get the 4.7 screen as I only have 1 pair of cargo pants and don't want to be the man purse guy just to carry my phone.

You must wear skinny jeans on the regular then. In that case, it's probably doesn't matter if you're the man purse guy because you are already the skinny jeans guy.

What a stupid thread. I don't even like iPhones or iOS but its natural that if Apple release a bigger 5.5" iPhone it will have more powerful internals. Have a bloody cry why don't you.

Sadly i believe it will be fair. I play games on my PC, without paying more for better hardware to run my games, i cant get the best experience possible. Somewhat of an analogy.

It'll be kind of fair, because by adding more features, apple can slip the cost difference by.
If they make the 5.5" with a bigger price tag, something has to justify it. It'll probably be something irrelevant and small.

No worries here.

Something "irrelevant and small" can't justify anything except an irrelevant and small increase in price.

Apple can, and will probably make the smallest things feel like they're "extordinary and revolutionary".

Alright, I take the 'small and irrelevant' part back because it seems like you are never going to live it down.

In the words if today's youth:
'k thx bye'

Nope, and they most likely know it as well. Anyone with half a working brain is only going to feel insulted if they try to pull some sheet like this. They are much better off just saying that the big screen will cost you an extra $50/100 without trying to peddle some BS spin with it.

Exactly. Probably one feature to differentiate them. That's it.

I think Apple would keep hardware largely the same to reap economies of scale. Why spend resources creating 2 types of cameras, when you can use the same camera design in both iPhones?

Consider the iPad air, retina iPad mini and iPhone 5s. All have 1gb of ram and use the same A7 processor despite the iPad having a much higher resolution compared to the 5s. I can see the larger iPhone having a faster-clocked A8 processor to account for the higher-res display, but otherwise, I believe they will both sport the same ram, processor and camera.

This way, you avoid fragmentation of hardware, which in turn makes it easier to develop apps. Imagine if you had to create 2 versions of an app for the 4.7" iPhone and the 5.5" iPhone. Most developers would just code for the 4.7" iPhone, making any spec improvement in the 5.5" pointless.

I don't see it as an issue of fairness, but one of whether it makes business sense to do so. And I think Apple won't out of sheer pragmatism. After all, the iPad air and iPad mini have practically the same specs!

It isn't fair, but neither is life.

I saw when Sony slimmed down their PlayStations, they would lose features too. At least Apple can charge more for the iPhone 6L. You pay more, you get more. Apple can do whatever they want. They may not necessarily be forcing anyone to get whichever. They just happen to cram more features on the 6L because it has a larger footprint. This is why it is rare to find small, compact Androids like a Z1 Conpact with cutting specs. It is like the Galaxy S vs Galaxy Note comparison between 6 vs 6L. And being late to the phablet, they really are catering the 6L to the power users. Apple stripped away features for the 4/4s owners too during the iOS7, didn't they?

Picking between 4.7 vs 5.5 really boils down to ideal dimensions/one-handed vs better specs. If people are too lazy to use their other hand to hold a phone, is some one-armed person who lost a hand fighting Darth Vader, or have shallow pockets, get 4.7. For people who grew up using Palm Pilots, Handspring Visor, Walkmans, Sega Game Gear, Nintendo Game Boy, 5.5 is no BIG DEAL to carry around. They will adjust. The better specs will hold up better in the longer run.

What we feel or believe today changes or starts to adapt over time. The same people who thought 4-4.3 inches is ideal back in 2010-2011 are the same people who want 4.7-5 inches now. It also depends on what you were using prior. Choose what you like and be content with it whether it ends up short-sighted or not. At the end, it about picking what suits you best.

Is it fair that the 15" Macbook Pro has higher specs and more features than the 13"?

What about the 27" iMac over the 21.5" iMac?

I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing with the iPhone.

Ha awesome. I'm actually bagging pants guy. Not sure which is worse being out of date baggy pants guy or being the skinny jeans guy.
