I'm sure I read somewhere CS3 runs better on a Mac than a PC. Not sure if it was a claim or an actual fact.

And who cares if it starts quicker? It's how smoothly and fast it runs. If I had an old Ford Escort that started its engine in 2 seconds, and you had a Ferrari that took 4 seconds to start its engine, doesn't make the Ford better does it?

After Effects CS3 is faster in Windows than Mac OS X.
Since After effects share the same code of others Adobe products i bet that results are the same for photoshop, encore, et al on identical chips. :apple:

I just did a second-load on my workstation and I got it to about 5 seconds. The first load after a cold boot was closer to 15. For comparison purposes, its rockin' a core 2 quad @ 2.4ghz, 4gb ram and a regular ol' sataII drive. It does have vista 64 bit.

agree, as long as its not too long, start up time isn't that important, IMHO.

I would love to see some real data of Ps CS3's benchmarks under vista and OSX, head to head. let me know if you find any.

Edit: here shows windows XP being faster (CS3 Beta tho)
http://www.circuitremix.com/index.php?q=node/9 still no vista data...

I found Arstechnica's benchmark of Photoshop CS3 on Intel OS X vs Windows XP, which gives OS X being quicker. But they don't compare Vista.

You can't compare a 5400 rpm 2.5" HD and a 10.000 rpm 3.5" HD.
Get CS3 on a external FW800 disk and you'll see much faster load.

MY 2 year old LaCie D2 FW 800 drive (which is a 7200 rpm) is much faster than my interna laptop HD and much faster than the fastest lappy HDs avaiable.

Here's a test comparing 4.2k 5.4k and 7.2k laptop drives, and you'll see the transfer rate differences

Even if an app is at first faster on windows, once its loaded with necessary anti-virus and anti-spyware taking up resources, OSX wins...

how strange nobody did any test on vista? giving that vista has been out for quite awhile....

As it was tested by Arstechnica's Mac people a while back, I suspect that Bootcamp didn't support Vista at the time of testing ;).

I suspect it hasn't been retested by others on Vista as the XP vs Vista benchmarks were made when Vista was released.

Well not exactly, Adobe's video editing stuff has only just returned to the Mac (although After Effects stayed I doubt they put as much effort into performance tweaking), so I'd expect the Windows versions to be faster. This is unlike Photoshop which has always been a Mac staple, and as the Arstechnica benchmarks show is faster on OS X.

Maybe its been menyioned earlier but Vista has a new technology where commonly accessed programs are automatically stored into the RAM. So a 3 sec load up would not be so surprising.

CS2 launches in 16 seconds on my old Powermac G4 1ghz with 1.25GB of RAM and (2) 7200rpm HDD.

IMO "PC people" are often more focussed on performance minutia than they probably should be, although hardcore gamers have a justifiable position regarding framerates.
