it is gonna flop as hard as the iPod (that everyone was saying sucked on release day)

just you wait.

I hope it doesn't flop.

I certainly didn't feel this way about the iPod and it wasn't goddang $1799.

Also there wasn't much in the way of mp3 players out yet, when it came out.

I know legions of road warrior types who can't get to the Apple Store fast enough to order one of these. For people who need ultra-portability this is a dream machine. There are a lot of these types.

I predict non-floppage.

To all those who are saying the MBA will flop... take a look at the Sony ultra portables. The MBA has a faster processor and is well below the price point of most of the Sony models.

Need to keep in mind, this is not intended to be a general use laptop - its designed to fit a niche market. For what it offers, it is very well priced and is absolutely beautifully designed.

I'm sure that the movie studios, etc., will pick it up; it won't sell well otherwise.

I mean, it isn't even going well on a Mac, er, fansite. I can imagine all the regular folks going into an Apple store, saying, "Wow, that's cool!" then buying a MacBook or just walking away when they hear the price.

I sure hope it doesn't flop. As a computer for mainly running MS Office on the go, that fits in a briefcase, and weighs next to nothing, it is a very nice machine. With better specs and battery life for a lower price than the competition, I think it will do well. I sure hope it doesn't flop, because I'll be in the market for a machine like that in a few years.

I don't think it will flop. However, I don't think it will be the iphone 2 either.

I think once it hits revision two, with a few my I/O's it will take off.

Apple is smart; they do the research; they introduce products that they certainly feel will be profitable.

I don't think it will completely flop, but i also don't think it will do great. most of the consumers who I think this is aimed at will still want an optical drive for watching movies, I think where it would have the biggest chance of succeeding would be the business market, but it won't do great there since none of apple's computers do great in business's.

Definitely impressive engineering. But the aesthetics comes at too high a price imo. After the first month of oohing and aahing...then what?

You realize you need to start dumping files to make space after installing photoshop cs3,

BWAHAHAHAHAH!

You realize that photoshop cs3 isnt used by the market segment this product is aimed for, right?

when i was looking at the first shots, i thought "cool, it looks like a good ibook replacement!" then i saw, 80gb ipod drive, aww, 1.6ghz c2d, aww, no optical drive, aww, $1800!!?! forget it, this should be a $700 computer, if that, and i think this "discless Utopia" that jobso has thought up is crazy, i dont use my drive much but when i do i really need it, starcraft LAN at my buddies, need it, watch a movie on the plane, need it, install new OS, need it. apple, i need a replacement for my G4 and a macbook pro is too spendy, macbook too weak of graphics, i want a 13 inch, 2.0c2d at least, good graphics, and $1499.

I think that if the 1800 got us the SSM then we would without a doubt have a winner, or even have 5 gb SSM to run the system off of whule the HD took care of the rest

The price is ridiculous. There have been a ton of super slim notebooks before it with ridiculous price tags. Theyve all failed. Every last one of them. And they were PC's. Thin has not and never will equal portable, its a stupid gimmick that only CEO's seem to fall for, current macbooks are plenty thin to be just as portable. Really, how the hell is 13.3" portable? Its like carrying around a stack of paper.

I dont think the MBA has a chance in hell at beating the mini in terms of success. It will probably sell slightly better than the Hi Fi.

What would have been a success? Tablet macbook. $800-1200 upgradable C2D tower. An ASUS EEE style computer. 13.3" MBP with 8600.

Does anyone elsed think the MBA is just a ploy to get more MacBook sales? It seems most people would pick the MBP over the MB. Now that the MBA is here, I think we will see more potential MBA buyers walking out of an Apple Store with a regular MB in hand.

I think they are catering to a market they haven't seen in awhile and some mac newcomers. It definatley isn't a product for everyone that's for sure.

I was thinking that exact same thing. It would make sense with the high price tag, and limited features. This macbook air just makes the light above a macbook even brighter. It's to dumb for apple to really be trying to push these things, it would be smarter to use the macbook air to push macbook sales. Makes sense to me.

ah yes, the myth that the 12" powerbook was a "pro" computer like its bigger siblings.

Wrong wrong wrong. It had lower RAM capacity. No backlit keys. Woefully weaker graphics. Slower processor. No FW 800. No high res screen. etc. etc. It was a glorified ibook in an aluminum shell. People have this idea that apple used to offer a "true pro-level laptop" in a 12" form factor, and woe-is-us because they don't any more. Well, they never did.

The reason I say this is because I think a lot of the disappointment about MBA comes from the fact that people wanted a replacement for a 12" powerbook, but the powerbook they "remember" never actually existed.

Say it loud brotherman!

One of the things I couldn't stand about the 12" was that it had no internal battery for sleep-swapping your battery. I *love* this feature on my 15".

There was no way the MBA was going to have an iMac's power but in an ultra small form. All of Apple's computers are essentially engineered to be as small as they can be. Sure the MacPro is large, but have you seen what fits inside!

Naysayers needn't buy one. I think it will be a hit.

Definitely.

The only thing the Macbook Air has over the macbook is the multi-touch touchpad (to the average user at any rate, the other benefits aren't that big a deal) Everything else the standard macbook has and indeed excels in.

If I was someone that had excess income, was looking for a work write-off, and went to fancy board meetings to give presentations I would buy one in a second. They look impressive enough to draw attention at a business meeting. I get looks from people directed at my MBP at work and this thing looks a hell of alot better than a MBP. Remember, in the business world looks are 55% of success. I literally just came home from watching corporate propaganda videos at work that stated that fact.

If I could afford a Mac pro I would buy a MBA after the next revision when hard drive specs get better. You don't need tons of performance to surf the internet, run spreadsheets, or run presentations. The specs are perfect for the majority of what most people do anyways.

It will not flop. The MacBook Air will sell tons and tons and tons, most of them MacBooks and MacBook Pros:D

The MacBook Air has the same functionality as a MacBook, but unlike the MacBook, which is nice, this one is really really really nice. Most notebooks you can't put in your living room because they are just too ugly. The MacBook fits in your living room without clashing. The MacBook Air makes your living room look a lot better. That's what you pay the difference in money for: To get something that is really nice.

And lots of people will go to an Apple Store and have a look at it. Some will buy it. Lots will see that the MacBook is just as good, not quite as nice but still heads above everything else out there, costs a lot less, and they will buy it. Lots will see that the MacBook Pro is a lot more powerful, not quite as nice but still reasonably nice, doesn't cost much more, and they will buy that.

Well, my wife would never, ever go on a Mac fansite. Yet, she wants one.
