yea, there is a lan that runs into every apartment, as internet is provided here for free. i took an ethernet cable and ran it into my airport express and put a wpa password on it...however, people are still able to long on...did i do something wrong?

but there are over 500 ppl who live in the building, how come i only see this one guy's computer on my shared section? my biggest concern is how secure my computer is from him. if im unable to access his computer, can he access and see files on my computer? can he steal files or is it a security threat?

It's possible they've subnetted the network. Although you may be attached to the same physical network, you're not connected to the same logical network.

If you have file sharing turned on, you can make sure your shared folders don't give access to the Everyone group. You can adjust those settings in System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing.

Exactly. Also, the default setting in OS X is to only share your Public folder so you most likely safe. Even if someone could see your main folders (Documents, Music, etc.) they'd need your user name and password to gain access to view the contents.

I'm glad my wired LAN hint seems to have clarified the issue.

As others have noted, OSX only shares the public folder by default (and file sharing isn't even on by default).

It is possible that you only see one computer because it is the only other computer on the same subnet with file sharing active. It doesn't really matter, unless you decided to share your folders with "everyone", then you should be secure.

Bonjour, the service that provides such shares, is supposed to only work over LAN but if your ISP does not filter service discovery traffic properly then you will see the shares over WAN but will not be able to access them. Your ISP may not be filtering this traffic properly.

EDIT: sorry, did not read page 2 of thread, my post does not seem to apply.

You should mention all this in your first post. You didn't think it was relevant???

Will resetting my airport express kick unauthorized users off my secured network?

No, because there are no unauthorized users on your secured network. But there may be users on the other network though.

yea ive turned file sharing off, but i guess im just paranoid. thanks for the help everyone.

Here is a silly thought. Maybe your network is setup correctly and nobody is connecting to it - but you are accidentally connecting to your neighbor and thus being on their network - this is why you see all their machines?

If this is not the case - login to airport express and change your encryption key. Then update your macbook with the new encryption key. This should shake everyone off because they will not have the new encryption key.

Good luck - let us know how it goes!
