Can you list any of these apps?

Along with MotionX mentioned above, Navigon and TomTom will also work fine. The easy way to figure out if an app will work without a data signal is to look at the size of the app download. If it's huge it includes maps. Navigon and TomTom are around 900MB.

MotionX lets you download map segments to the iPad for regular road, topographic or marine navigational.

Was it precise (e.g if you walked from one side of your house to the other did it "see" that in real time?

Therefore (if you have downloaded the maps) can you use the GPS without any connections to the internet.?

If I download the maps on wi-fi then go outside (with no connections) and track my position will it be free?

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Does anyone have a iPhone 3G/3GS without service and does the GPS still work? If so it should be the same work/or not work as the 3G/3GS iPhone.

ok - I've read this thread and looking to unravel a mystery I have...

I have 2 devices:

  1. an prev iPhone 3GS that has a deactivated AT&T SIM in it
  2. an iPad 3G

while the GPS looks like it works on my iPhone 3GS most of the time, I don't understand why it seems to go horribly wrong sometimes.

even without a data plan on my iPad, the GPS works really well.

I've been using CoPilot Live USA to test both these devices off the Internet.

the iPad appears to do consistently well with navigation.

if anyone can unravel this mystery, this would be great :)

That's a good question. Of course the A (assisted) part won't work. However the GPS should work. Does anyone have a iPhone 3G/3GS without service and does the GPS still work? If so it should be the same work/or not work as the 3G/3GS iPhone.
Incorrect (as far as I know).

They're using GPS-A only, which means that an internet service signal must be within reach for the GPS to triangulate itself.
