And the complaint is even with over 200GB free on my ipad Pro after over one hundred apps, I can't save things locally. I need to use cloud storage. I ain't talking basic stuff like photo storing. Why can't I store files locally with so much storage, even a chrome let's you store files in a download area. Anything gets from zipped PSD templates to PHP files.
Then get a laptop. The retina Macbook is as practical size wise as an iPad. I'm not sure what's the point of complaining for something that doesn't meet your needs where there are plenty of suitable tools out there. It's not like an iPad is the only computing device out there.

Or did you buy an iPad just because? Sounds like an expensive way to complaint.

Speaking for myself, I bought the iPad knowing full well what it could and couldn't do. It doesn't meet all of my needs so I am forced to also have a laptop to do a lot of things. The shame of it is that I need two devices because of software limitations in the iPad. It could easily fill all of my needs with a small amount of work on Apple's part. But for whatever reason, they have chosen not to add those features - so far. Maybe one day they will and I can get by with one device.

Not everyone has, needs, wants multiple devices. Many people would be quite happy having their files only on their iPad.
Yeah, dumb people. Who the hell would only keep files on a mobile device, wait, the same dumb people who don’t keep backups of their files on their desktop or laptop then cry foul when it crashes/breaks and they lose everything. Some people need saving from theirselves.

iOS devices (and the Mac to an extent) are meant to be client devices like some of you have pointed out. Apple is pushing the cloud like many other companies are. It’s where the money is. And it allows for “anywhere access” of your files. One term that Microsoft got right.

Pixelmator does a good job with photos allowing you to update existing files rather than just saving new copies. More apps need to use these APIs, but remember, some apps have their own cloud storage which will always be prioritized over local storage.

You can lose files in the cloud too so the primary location where files are kept has nothing to do with having a good backup strategy.

How does having 1 device mean that they don't have/want backups of their data?

Dumb people make dumb assumptions

I live and work in the real world and those assumptions are scarily real, trust me.

I agree that a large percentage of people do have multiple devices, however it isn't the case for 100% of people.

As an example, I know 2 people (older) who use their iPad as their main internet device and a cheap android phone for calls and WhatsApp.

And with Apple calling the iPad a PC replacement I can easily see many people choosing a setup like that.

My iPad Pro does everything I bought it for, editing massive PSDs in affinity, colour correction in Lightroom, on the go client side scripting code in Coda. It's the quirks with this files app that annoys me, why should anyone buy a iPad with more than the base storage unless they're storing films on it (which certainly doesn't justify the pro name if I can't actually use all of my storage for pro like tasks such as storing files so I could maybe use this super portable device better on the go). I know I'm over reacting, and the share sheet allows me to move files between apps which is really just more steps to the same solution; but the whole excitement around this files app is rather uninspired with it missing a lot of pro features. It doesn't even support unzipping files. My iPad can apply a liquify effect at 120fps on a 50 layered PSD document better than any pc in its price range, but without a third party app, still can't unzip a folder that contains said PSDs.

I created a workflow using the workflow app that automates the process of previewing files in a zipped folder and lets me save the decompressed files, but the fact I have to add these features myself on a device labelled as pro is very 'android' like.

There is truth to this. Storing anything important locally is an incredibly poor habit these days when cloud storage is plentiful. Sure, you can have it on the cloud and local backup just in case (which I do) but storing important data on a mobile device that can be lost is such a poor idea. Mobile devices can be stolen or lost SO easily.

The reality for people not on tech forums, so 99% of people, DON'T use backups and ARE dumb enough to keep their data in only 1 place; especially an tablet/phone if it's their only device.

Apple has never said this, but if you have something that proves otherwise, please post it here.
Are you for real? Clearly haven't watched TV in recent months or listened to what Tim Cook is putting out in the media.

Ipad Pro..not just replace but BETTER than a computer

Apple's whole new line of commercials going with that one pitch why iPad Pro can replace what a PC does. It's CLEARLY being marketed as such. http://osxdaily.com/2017/02/18/new-ipad-pro-commercials-pitch-device-as-computer-replacement/

Tim Cook, of course, insists that iPad Pro is a real computer.

“I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one? Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones,” he said recently.

I appreciate the large comment, but I am going to reply simply that if Apple want me to use the cloud, don't make me spend 1K on an iPad with a load of un-usable storage then charge me for iCloud storage. Next, the iPad is a portable device and needs files offline. I would need them to cache my whole drive space on my iPad (at least taking advantage of the iPads storage as well as acting as a backup) so no matter what file I am looking for or working on, its there.

Wait wait wait. No one FORCED you to buy the biggest storage ipad with gun to temple. You can get a Pro as little as $650/$799 10.5/12.9 (or $599/799 when it was the 1st gen 9.7/12.9).

It was NEVER able to store random files when you bought it to begin with either, and iOS11/Files was nothing then; so clearly you did not buy that big of storage for that purpose to begin with.

The larger storage has always been for media people; photos, music, and movies. That is who it was geared to. The bulk of sales are not the largest storage capacity models.

Cache your hard drive to an ipad? You couldn't even use 90% of your hard drive files on an ipad. I think you truly bought the wrong device and would do better with a Surface or windows tablet thats a full PC.

Lol you don't know what you're talking about. All of my files work on my iPad because I USE them on my iPad. PSDs, Pixelmator files, HTML and css, JS... it seems the devs are ahead of Apple. And I tried a surface tablet, I found the software experience awful for my uses lol this is a secondary device. This entire thread is about the files app being half baked, I'm happy with my iPad pro just not apples direction with their files app.

Nor do you. What do you NEED access to app specific file types stored locally for? Ie. how would said PSD being in Files BENEFIT you exactly? Pixelmator surely has a share sheet to email, airdrop, message, save to cloud storage, open in another app that supports said file, etc.

So what EXACTLY would these files types being lumped into the Files app do for you since it's ALREADY stored locally when stored by Pixelmator in its sandbox? What benefits EXACTLY would that bring the user, while remaining easy enough for non-tech savvy, the 99% of consumers, to still use.

Unfortunately this song (product) is not about you (and your personal needs), but rather the product made for bulk of Apple users with it as the anti-pc simpler/more reliable to use.

The iPad isn't a PC C: drive to dump any type of file on to save no matter how bad you want or wish it to be because of your own usage habits. /story

For the I'm-smarter-than-you folks:

1) apparently you have never been in a dead zone or <1mbps area. The cloud is useless there.
2) the iPad is a computer. So is the iPhone, iPod touch and Apple Watch.
3) just because you don't want local storage doesn't mean no one else does.

Couldn't have wrote it better myself!

You can cache cloud storage files to you device now. Certainly Onedrive just updated their app to support caching full folders offline to the device.

It's not 'smarter than anyone." APPLE says no soup for you, PERIOD. Arguing with me over what APPLE chose to do is frankly idiotic as I dont work for Apple nor are Tim Cook. I'm simply trying to explain why APPLE may have chosen to do it this way.

It is what it is for now until Apple decides differently, and no amount of discussion or complaining on Macrumors forums will change that. History shows that is not a mentality based in reality.

The only realistic solution is workarounds right now as mentioned, or buy a more full computer like device.

What a perfect slap on all apologists faces.

I don’t trust any cloud other than my NAS server at home. I use second Android phone with 256 gb SD card for all my storage and file manager needs.

Apologist? No, that's just ignorant childish name calling. We all would LIKE this feature; anyone who doesn't want or wouldn't take more function is lying.

Try more like a realist. Complaining on MR will get you NOWHERE other than talking in circles about wishes hopes and dreams. Period, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

The "apologists" are merely suggesting viable alternatives in the real world where Apple couldn't care less what anyone posts here and isn't going to change based on a 2 page thread on MR based on a niche usage pattern.

Apple engineers do read macrumors forums a lot. If you are a regular here, you would know about articles posted regarding visits from IP addresses coming from Cupertino.

The lag and stuttering which which made iOS 8 infamous was discussed at length here on these forums. During iOS 9 keynote, Tim Cook specifically mentioned that they were focusing on speed and performance improvements. The lag and stutter actually reduced from iOS 9 on wards.

Someone had posted about input blocking for 1-2 seconds after home screen animation where you couldn't immediately tap on home screen icons after returning to home screen. But Apple fixed that in iOS 10.

The list goes on and Apple does listen at least 50% of the tiny complaints here.

The Files app needs On This iPhone/iPad storage section which should be accessible after connecting iDevice to a PC using lightning-usb cable.
Otherwise that app makes ZERO sense what-so-ever.
