it was stated here as far back as in July of 2024 that iPad 11 is going to get the A16 based on device identifiers

Secondly there are enough iPads for now to get Apple intelligence compared to 3 iPhone Models
With no inside knowledge, my prediction was 6 GB RAM and possibly A16, just based on Apple's historical iPad tech upgrade patterns. I know AI is an added variable, but as you say, there are already many different AI-compatible iPad devices available, so they don't necessarily have to make the "cheap" entry-level model AI-capable, especially since most of the users in this category likely don't care anyway. I'll probably be buying whether it's A16 / 6 GB or if it's A17 Pro / 8 GB, as AI is not a selling point for us. (I have an M4 iPad Pro and will be keeping AI turned off for the foreseeable future.)

It could be a calculated PR move. Apple's terabytes of daily anonymous user data might tell them that the iPad 10 is used by a lot of kids for homework. They might be wanting to avoid the parental backlash that might come from putting an rewrite AI in the hands of middle schoolers.

Of course it's probably them being cheap to raise the margins.

Probably the latter, especially since kids in middle/high school will usually have access to more than just an iPad for homework assignments. However, the latter also because it's in the context of most iPad owners not giving a damn about AI at this time. And for those that do care about AI, there are several other iPads out there that already support AI.

Well, sure, if they never want Apple Intelligence to have even a chance to take off, keep on gatekeeping it…
Apple haven’t realised that their AI suite is not them offering something unique to the world but them playing catchup…

Meh. They haven’t even rolled out all the AI features yet. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if they wait until next year to release a fully AI capable entry level iPad, esp. since most people in this price bracket don’t care anyway.

If they keep it at the $300+ price then sure. Good.

But if they bump it back up to $400+, they can go and wake up their idea.

Of course it will. Additionally, with Apple forcing people to opt out vs opt in to AI on the upcoming update Apple is using all this to “train” their software. While no data might be sold Apple is sure gonna use it.

What’s preventing them from using 8GB of Ram with the A16 and giving it Apple Intelligence?
The same reason my 14 Pro with an A16 Pro didn’t get 8GB, saving money? I think the advantages of giving the iPad 11 AI outweighs the money they would save by gimping it with 6GB of RAM.

The RAM isn’t built into the SoC, just attached directly to it, so there’s no reason they couldn’t just use 8 GB instead. I wonder if they pair an A16 with 8 GB of RAM if that’ll be enough. Based on M1 chips getting it despite using older cores and neural engine than the A16, I’m guessing the limit was always around RAM and not much else.
You are correct. It's the 8 GB that is the limit and there is no reason why they can't pair the A16 with 8 GB of RAM. The M1 has an inferior neural engine to the A16. Time will tell here and they may choose to omit Apple Intelligence from the entry iPad altogether (and try to use it to upsell people to the iPad Air), but they could also pair the A16 with 8 GB of RAM and bring Apple Intelligence to the entry level iPad that way.

Apple Intelligence is NOT opt out, it's opt in. Or in other words it's completely disabled until you turn it on.

When I went to try it out I had to wait for everything to download before I could use it. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether it would ever pre-download to speed the process of enabling it up.

Not in 18.3, that's the problem.

If the iPad 11 doesn't support AI, I think it will be a disaster. At that point, it would just be a slightly faster iPad 10, so everyone may as well keep their old iPads (or buy the 10s for much less than the 11).

The iPhone 15 has an A16 with 6GB of RAM and it doesn't support AI, so I would expect that iPad 11 would be better than that. Maybe they will have an A16X with 8GB of RAM and a faster Neural Engine?

The thing is, customers don't seem to care about AI, so it wouldn't be a disaster in terms of sales. Polling of 16 iPhone customers has shown that virtually none of them are buying it because of that. In other words the Apple Intelligence campaign is *not* pushing product.

Based solely off the new Arizona plant producing A16 chips, thats where my moneys at.

To me A17 pro and 8GB of RAM sounds like a bit too much of a good deal without a 449 price.

Yeah, it makes sense tbh. A base, cheap iPad aimed at education with a high end SoC such as the A17 Pro and 8GB of RAM sounded too good to be true…

I have to agree here. How is apple going to sell the airs and the minis for significantly more if their base iPad is that powerful and cheap (450 USDs)

Additionally, apple is still pumping out iPad 10 as of late December 2024. Curiously to me, a16 and 6pm ram would be a jump similar to iPad 9 to 10. Since the iPad 10 will surely be selling officially when the 11 comes out, I wonder how big between the 10 and 11 has to be to warrant the price difference, whilst not completing with their own airs.

Gurman has a “good track record”? That’s rich. Here you have two supposed reliable leakers saying different things. What does that tell you? It means at least one of them is definitely full of it and more likely they are both just guessing like everyone else reading this post.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the iPad 11 will support Apple Intelligence, but a new leak has added uncertainty to the rumor.

According to a private account on social media platform X, with a good track record of sharing iOS-related information, the iPad 11 will be equipped with a chip that has the identifier T8120. That identifier corresponds with the A16 chip, which does not support the Apple Intelligence suite of artificial intelligence features. Existing devices with the A16 chip include the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Plus.

We continue to respect the account owner's request to not link to its posts, as they wish to remain anonymous and maintain a low profile.

Gurman said to look for the iPad 11 to have the A17 Pro chip and 8GB of RAM, which are currently the minimum iPad specs for Apple Intelligence. The latest iPad mini also has the A17 Pro and 8GB of RAM. However, if the anonymous account is correct, the next entry-level iPad will actually use the A16 chip, which has 6GB of RAM. That means either no Apple Intelligence, or Apple curiously lowers the minimum iPad specs for it.

We don't know who is right here: Gurman, or the anonymous account. Both sources have good track records with Apple rumors, with the occasional miss.

Or, could both sources be right? We are purely speculating, but Apple could end up offering multiple iPad 11 configurations and price points.

Apple will likely announce the iPad 11 by March or April, and no major changes are expected for the device beyond the improved specs. According to Gurman, Apple is also planning to release an updated Magic Keyboard accessory for the iPad 11.

I am a big fan of Microsoft copilot and openAI ChatGPT but I actually never used apple intelligence since it became available as public beta. So why bothering?

Less AI, more FIX IPADOS. If i can’t have basic decades old OS functions then WTF do I care about AI.

I have a IPP (sucks ass), I returned the Air becuase it sucked extra hard ass. I also have a Mini, and MBPs so I have many use cases. The IPP is my biggest buyers remorse of the last 10y.

Math notes? Like are you actually ****ing kidding me? Tim Cook needs a long walk off a short dock.

As someone with some obviously strong feelings towards iPadOS (and I'm not disagreeing with you!) but specifically what problems do you have with it?

Possible for Apple to use A16 chip. Apple Intelligence will be available only on the costlier models. But at the same time if the upcoming SE can get Apple Intelligence at $449 or even $499, there is no reason for the basic iPad to not get it. Launch should be happening soon. Have to wait and see.

I think that they will make the iPad 10 obsolete as soon as the iPad 11 comes out. They don't need 2 low end iPad, as that would just cause confusion. Not to mention that keeping it around means they still need to keep making A14 chips.
