That's not the source for the iPad 5 not getting it. We already know about the iphone 5S, but nothing about it delaying a fingerprint reader for the iPad.

It does, because it is the same fingerprint sensor that would go in the iPad. If it is in short supply for the iPhone 5S, how would they get enough supply to put it in the iPad 5 as well....?

I'm not into the Touch ID. I would probably disable the function. If the new iPad comes with it, cool. If it doesn't, oh well.

ipad 5 is gonna be sick. lighter thinner faster and expect all the goodies of the 5s 64bit, touch id, and 128gb. Doubt the camera will have the same specs but it's an iPad,who cares.

This is the perfect iPad that I want :D

Thinner, lighter, 128GB, Touch ID. SOLD!

No it does not. The iphone is still in production with the fingerprint sensor, though it may have some delays, but that does not mean the ipad will not have it. It too may have some delays, but not cancelled. Why not wait until Oct to be so darn sure of yourself instead of posting that it WILL not. Instead you should have said it might not ;)

I think so.

Has anyone considered the yield problems of the touch ID sensor might be because they've implemented it in 2 or 3 devices? iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 and iPhone 5s.

Exactly. That said, the iPad Retina (and potential $399 Retina Mini) would be much lower volume products. They would only require 5 to 10 percent of the total sensor supply.

No retina on the iPad mini, they could have bu didn't. I see the same for the iPad 5. They can put the sensor but they won't. Will save it for 6.

well there havent been any picture leaks of the front of the new ipad, i think apple is hiding something new and my bet is that it's the touch ID:)

How do you know they could have put retina in last years mini? Would you say the same thing about the original Nexus 7?

I have nothing to add but some conjecture.

They could easily justify not adding Touch ID technology, putting it down to a myriad of reasons.

1. Most iOS theft and accidental loss is of iPhones.
2. Most iPads are sold wifi-only, so no GPS to make this feature into more of a useful security measure
3. Added cost, no carrier subsidies to hide behind
etc etc

I could go on. But it adds up to less demand / logistical implementability and higher risk for them.

I don't hold high hopes, and I would agree with them if them decide not to make the gamble to add it.

The only reason I want it is to bypass the slide to unlock process, which is an absurd anachronism, an interface crime in which we are all complicit.

Because it was already on the iPad. Apple is known to save available features for next generations. So many examples to pick from.

Yes. And I expect it on the iPod touch line up next year and on Macs' trackpad in the future.

The leaked pics of the iPad 5 only show a normal home button.

Not an over sized one for Touch ID.

Well, there were some leaked photos of what was supposed to be the front of the iPhone 5s and its home button was the same size as the 5. (This means nothing if the leaked part really wasn't from the 5s)

I still say the iPad 5 won't have Touch ID.

TouchID does not require an internet connection - it's all on-board.

Find My iPhone (Pad/Pod) does. Activation Lock does for some functions, not for others.

If the iPad 5 comes with an A7 (or A8), then it's at least capable of having TouchID. Without a latest-generation chip, it can't happen.

Folks have had a tendency to roll TouchID and Activation Lock/Find My iDevice into a single package. Either works independently of the other, the combination of the two becomes that much more powerful.

Will it/won't it happen? Corporate/government IT will buy a lot more iPads if it has the feature. The person on the street with an iPhone 5s will want it - total freedom from the passcode. That argues in favor.

When the Apple experts are reporting/predicting component shortages, they're only predicting near-term supplies. As with all other components, yield and supply improve with time. Unless an iPad 5 is due within the next month...
