There are two segments of tablets in today's market. First, there is the conventional sized tablets aroudn 10 inches. In that category the iPad 3 is the clear winner. Then there is a new and emerging market of tablets around the 7 inch size. Here the Nexus 7 is currently ruling. So the iPad Mini is going to released with that in mind. I am sure they will conquer both the tablet markets like they always do with their other products. So please do not compare the iPad 3 with that of iPad Mini...although they are tablets they belong to different genres and totally different user base.

If a person has no concept of what the mini is, then your advice is right on. But if a person has a 7" tablet now but with the wrong OS (not iOS) why not decide to get one if you want?

Do you really think Apple would come out with a mini tablet that is all wrong?

Apple people have had so little change that many are highly resistant and freak out just the rumor of change! Then you got those who need to ask others in this forum if they should buy something.

It would NEVER occur to me to ask anyone, here, if I should buy something or even if the new device is too small.

I'm guessing so. I'm a bit befuddled in general why anyone would even want one. Between the standard sizes iPads and iPhones and iPod touches there can't be much room for another device. The ipad Is only Jusr and in fact, in somE senses not adequate vis a vis reading text and the mini won't have text Flow. I'll just be stunned if there's people using all three.

I"m amazed at how many people just don't get it. For me the big iPad is too big and is redundant to a laptop. I don't need an iPod because I have an iPhone. I have a Kindle Fire and it is the right form factor, but it has the wrong OS.

Prepare yourself to be very stunned. There are going to be a lot of people buying the iPad mini.

The Mini needs to be no wider than a Nexus 7 which fits (barely)in a standard Mens suit or jacket inside pocket - otherwise you have to "carry" it and it loses appeal. Men (at least the ones I know) don't carry purses, so it needs to fit in a jacket or pants front pocket or whats the point?

My question is , would current iPad owners also get the mini

You should start a thread with that question. I'll get my popcorn and watch. :D

Agreed. I don't carry my Fire in coat. It's kept in a case which works real nice around the house and for traveling. That size is what it's all about.

I've never been a fan of the large tablets, and I don't know why people rave about them. If I needed a screen that big I would just use my laptop, which has far more functionality.

7" tablet is as big as I would go, and despite being as useful as a Beta video player the Blackberry Playbook was just perfect (although finances prevented me from purchasing one at the time).

The iPad Mini is a great option, I only wish the thing would be slightly smaller. 6"-7" inches would be good. 7.85" is closer to 8".

Now I'm being picky. :)

People love the Kindle Fire, and this is almost an inch bigger than that. I have a friend who says she and her husband prefer their Kindle Fire to their iPad, because the iPad feels too big in comparison. I have a feeling in 5 years, we'll all be on 7.85" iPads. The 9.7" will seem like a big antique, like brick cell phones.

I'm sure many will prefer the smaller size, but I'm not sure that the 9-10 inch size will become obsolete, either. One reason why the bigger size may be more desirable is that at that size, the landscape keyboard is almost the size of a full-size keyboard. And there are those who like a larger screen, simply because they get to see more content at once. There are always going to be a segment of users who prefer the larger keyboard or more content visibility over portability. The question is, if that number will be big enough to keep the 9-10 inch tablet economically feasible. We'll see, I guess!
