A second-generation iPhone Air is "not expected this year," according to a Nikkei Asia report today that cites people familiar with Apple's supply chain.

The report said Apple plans to release an iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and foldable iPhone later this year, followed by the base model iPhone 18 in the first half of next year. The report said Apple does have a revamped iPhone Air in the pipeline, but the publication does not expect it to launch until at least 2027.

While one leaker on the Chinese social media platform Weibo has insisted that the iPhone Air will receive a spec bump this year, most reports from sources such as Bloomberg and The Information have pointed to an early 2027 launch. If so, the iPhone Air 2 would likely be released alongside the base model iPhone 18.

Last year, The Information reported that Apple was aiming to add a second rear camera to the next iPhone Air. That report added that the next iPhone Air could weigh less, have a larger battery capacity, and gain a vapor chamber cooling system like the iPhone 17 Pro models have. And Bloomberg expects the device to have a 2nm chip.

While several reports indicated that the iPhone Air has been in low demand, the extreme popularity of the iPhone 17 base model and the iPhone 17 Pro models led iPhone revenue to a new all-time high last quarter, according to Apple.

The Air is my fav iPhone since iPhone X. Apple can push the envelope further though. Since the Air is a low volume product, hoping they can secure enough to swap the lithium ion batteries with silicon-carbon so they can squeeze an ultrawide camera and a bottom speaker for iPhone perfection.

Maybe it's a bit hypocritical for me to say this as someone who opted for the 17 Pro Max, but I think that the Air is very underrated phone. I got the PM just because I like the slightly larger screen and it never hurts to have more battery life, but I'm sure that I would be well satisfied with an Air too.

Why didn’t you get a second air ? Or just another sim into your air if it’s so nice and best ?

The two sim thing never works fluidly.

I also need two handsets.

I bought them both around release not knowing I would end up preferring one over the other.

Another thing I have noticed is that the 17 pro overheats more easily than the air.

On a similar note, the aluminum case was a mistake in the pro. Far too malleable compared to titanium.

I've been contemplating replacing my se2020 with either the air or base 17 model. I seldom take photographs, use the iPhone for fitness, health, books, phone calls (imagine that), text messages - so either will work. I suppose I'll have to consider the trade off between cost and weight. the base 18 comes into play if the se2020 continues to function long enough (implicit assumption that I continue to function should be noted).

When will Apple understand that users only care about thinness when it doesn't mean excessive compromises on other aspects such as battery life, heat management, product features, and so on, which it always does.

Users just don't care that much about products being thinner, whether it's laptops, phones, or tablets.

"Thinner" is nice to have, it's not a feature for which I'll pay extra or am willing to accept significant drawbacks in other areas.

2027 seems obvious like it was all along
Apple maybe playing the cautious game here. If the fold sells well along with the Pro line then it could discontinue the iPhone Air 2 at the last minute.

The loss from don’t this is cheaper than producing a successor and we have seen Samsung do this very move as well.

Its a nice phone, but not priced correctly at £999. Should have put in the A19 regular SoC and charged between £600-700 which would be about right for what your getting in terms of specs.

Adding a silicon-carbon battery to the iPhone Air 2 would also see its introduction to the Fold and Pro line meaning iPhone Air 2 maybe stuck with battery life usage from 2024 and marketing it in 2027.

The question is, who is the iPhone Air target audience and is it profitable for mass adoption?

The sales figures already speaks volume and Apple is a mass consumer electronic company and has to keep investors happy.

I sure hope they give up on an ultra thin phone and give us what we actually need and/or want. Another iPhone Mini would be nice, but only if the price is right. As it stands now looking at the current lineup, I doubt it would.

You hope they give up on ultra thin.... But want them to bring back the Mini which even less people bought?

*If* there is indeed a RAM shortage (assuming that applies to the type Apple needs for iPhones), I suspect that will drive Apple to carefully consider if an iPhone Air gen 2 will be released this year, especially if that would adversely impact the release of iPhone 18 Pro models.

To please both camps, Apple will release an ultra thin iPhone mini with 8 hrs of battery life in low power mode and slap a MagSafe battery pack to it for all day use. 💣

The iPhone air is the best phone ever made and I think they should consider doubling down on it.

I also own a 17 pro and the air's bigger screen and it's much lighter feel and comfort in the hand makes the air the clear winner.

I take a lot of photos and the air's single camera is more than enough.
I literally feel the same!

I might keep my 17 Pro Max but buy an iPhone Air simply because it’s lighter and thinner. Chargers are available literally everywhere. Home, driving in your car to work/home, having a charger at your work desk.

It’s like I love my 16” M1 Max MBP, but carrying around a 13” MacBook Air is easier and still does the daily tasks.
